Florida Gators’ Heisman Hype For DJ Lagway Questioned by Analyst Over One Glaring Concern

Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway has been generating hype this offseason about a potential Heisman Trophy-winning 2025 season. This is because the Willis, Texas native bedazzled the college football scene with how he fared in his rookie year, leading the team in passing yards by a significant amount with 1915 in total.

In an episode of the “Cover 3” podcast on YouTube on Sunday, July 13, collegiate football analyst Graham Hall was a guest and was immediately asked about his thoughts on Lagway potentially bringing home this year’s best player of the year award. Hall did agree to this, but just addressed a concern he thinks that Lagway should address.

“I think this is a guy that is still scratching the surface. Now, obviously, there are some areas he needs to improve upon, handling his own coverage, making sure that he makes the right decisions and maybe overconfidence is a little bit of something that you saw be detrimental to him last season. I mean, he’s always been able to have success with the power he has and reading defenses and continuing to improve is an area that I think that everyone is looking to see how he fares,” Hall explained. “And, that’s why I think him missing spring camp was notable because there were things that he could have done from a throwing perspective and continue to improve and read defenses that he just didn’t get a chance to do without throwing. So, it absolutely is, you know, a really exciting time for Florida fans and they think that they have a quarterback who is going to be able to take them over the top,” he added.

Hall then concluded his discussion with a bold statement.

“But, we’re going to need to see, I think a little bit more improvement out of DJ Lagway this season but when it comes to potential, there’s no one I would put on top right in college football other than him,” Hall said. (2:36)

In the 2024 season, Lagway led the Gators to an overall record of 8-5 (4-4, SEC) and won this year’s Gasparilla Bowl versus the Tulane Green Wave by 24 points, 33-8.

Graham Hall Believes That The Florida Gators Will Need To Capitalize On DJ Lagway’s Explosiveness

As much as analyst Graham Hall detailed the aspects of DJ Lagway’s skillset that he needs to improve on, Hall did reassert his belief that he can take the Florida Gators over the hump in the 2025 season and uncork a better overall campaign. Hall then said that it’s all up to the program now take advantage of Lagway’s abilities.

“I think that the guy is just tremendous talent, really mature for his age and what you saw from an explosive play perspective last year really has to give you hope that Florida’s going to be able to capitalize on all the talent that I mentioned that they have at the skill positions and, you know, 6-1 as a starter last year, that one loss came against Georgia when he exited in the second round in the second quarter with that grade two hamstring sprain,” Hall shared. Lagway and coach Billy Napier’s Gators will open their 2025 campaign on Aug. 30 against the Long Island University Sharks in their home stadium.
