“Don’t Need the Refs to Win” – Madison Booker Reflects on Team USA’s AmeriCup Title and a Culture of Toughness

Madison Booker was one of the key players on Team USA that recently won the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Chile. They beat Brazil, 92-84, in the final and booked themselves a spot in the 2026 FIBA World Cup.

On Friday, July 11, Booker joined Jordan Robinson’s “The Women’s Hoops Show” to discuss their unbeaten run on the international stage. She also talked about the mindset the team carried before the all-important games.

“We had to have some stuff to us, you know, some junk to us a little bit,” Booker said (6:27). “Like the last two matches, especially Brazil, they’re the defending champs in America Cup, so just kind of going against them, like you couldn’t be soft, you had to bring your best game and also just a little bit of edge, a little bit of, you know — I liked necessarily that we didn’t need the refs to win.”

“And I think I’m going to take that with me forever. Like, if you have talent and effort and you play like you’re supposed to play, you don’t need the refs to win. So, I think that’s kind of like what our mindset was going into the last game, and just win. Just go out and win,” she added.

How Did Madison Booker Perform in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup?

During a group-stage game against Puerto Rico, she ignited a scoring spark in the third quarter, recording seven points in the first five minutes. She finished the game with nine points, five assists, and two steals in just 20 minutes.

Her best performance came in the quarterfinal against the Dominican Republic, where she posted 13 points, an AmeriCup record-tying six steals, and added three assists. In the semifinal against Canada, Booker scored 12 points. She provided a clutch spark late in the game, including seven points in the fourth quarter, to help her team secure a 65–53 victory.

Finally, in the gold medal game against Brazil, the 20-year-old logged 25 minutes and contributed seven points and five rebounds.

Next up, Booker will don the Texas Longhorns jersey for the upcoming season. The former Big 12 Freshman of the Year is coming off a season where she earned First-team All-American recognition. She’ll join point guard Rori Harmon and center Taylor Jones, who also earned national and conference honors.
