Angel Reese may be best known for her time at LSU, where she beat arch rival Caitlin Clark for the NCAA national championship, but a year before that, “Bayou Barbie” played for Maryland. She was quite the star player for the Terrapins and her transfer to LSU surprised many.
A Maryland native herself, Reese explained during a 2023 interview about why she decided to enter the transfer portal after two successful years at Maryland.
“A fresh start, that’s what I came to LSU for. I just wanted a fresh start. I’ve done things in my past that I kind of regret. I mean, there’s things that I’ve done. But I came from Maryland and I succeeded at Maryland, but I wanted more. And more was to get better every single day and then cut down nets one day,” Reese said in a 2023 interview with ASAP Sports.
“So just being able to be within a program where like with Kim Mulkey where she was going to push me every day and keep my humble and to get me to the next level, I think what was important for me. And I needed Coach Mulkey and that’s just what I needed. I needed Coach Mulkey,” she added.
The decision to transfer from Maryland to LSU eventually bore fruit, as Reese helped lead the Tigers to an NCAA national title the same season she transferred. She currently plays for the Chicago Sky where she consistently brings the team double-double performances.
At the time of her transfer, she was considered the biggest transfer at that time, with LSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee all vying for her commitment. In the end, she went with Kim Mulkey and won a national championship in the process.
Angel Reese Named WNBA All-Star Reserve
Despite her rival, Caitlin Clark, being named an All-Star team captain after she became the top vote-getter, many fans believed that Angel Reese might not even make the All-Star Game. However, the Chicago Sky power forward was named into the All-Star reserves, and there is even a possibility that her rival of all people would pick her.
Reese will be joined by Sonia Citron, Skylar Diggins, Whyne Howard, Kiki Iriafen, Kelsey Mitchell, Kelsey Plum, Alyssa Thomas, Kayla Thornton, Courtney Williams, Gabby Williams, and Jackie Young in the All-Star reserves list. Clark and Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier will be the two captains, and each will take turns picking who will go in their respective teams in Indianapolis.
