3X Champion Candace Parker Compares Former College Stars Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen to Elite WNBA Pairings

Sonia Citron is quickly emerging as one of the biggest stars in the WNBA. After a stellar career with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Citron was selected by the Washington Mystics with the third pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. She was one of three players selected by the Mystics in the first round of this year’s draft.

Immediately after Citron was picked, former USC star Kiki Iriafen was selected by the Mystics with the fourth pick. Kentucky guard Georgia Amoore was then selected by the Mystics with the sixth pick. However, Moore has been ruled out for her rookie season because of an ACL injury. As a result, Citron and Iriafen have formed a dynamic duo early in their rookie seasons.

On Wednesday, Sonia Citron sat down for an interview with former WNBA star Candace Parker on the Bleacher Report YouTube channel. Citron remained humble in the interview, but then Parker started to praise her, saying that she and Iriafen could be one of the elite duos in the WNBA for years to come.

“Well you and Kiki are proving that you have a dynamic duo in the making,” Parker said (Timestamp 1:35). “I got to read off these stats because you’re being a little humble, and I like that but we gonna give you your flowers. First rookie in the WNBA to reach 100 points this season, in seven games. Fastest Mystics rookie to reach 100 career points since Stacey Dales in 2002. ”

You’re averaging 13.7 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game and 2.2 assists per game. So, you’re a stat stuffer.”

Candace Parker certainly knows what she is talking about when it comes to knowing if someone is capable of being a star in the WNBA. She played in the league from 2008 to 2023, winning three WNBA championships and two MVPs.

Sonia Citron Is Off to a Strong Start to Her WNBA Career

In her final season at Notre Dame, Sonia Citron did not have the opportunity to be a dominant offensive force. She performed well, averaging 14.1 points per game. However, with Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles also on the team, Citron needed to share the ball a lot.

Now that Citron is on a young and rebuilding Washington Mystics team, she is emerging as a dynamic scoring threat. Her numbers have improved since her conversation with Candace Parker. She is now averaging 15.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game as per Basketball Reference. She is also the team’s second-leading scorer behind Brittney Sykes.
