Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and the Ohio State Buckeyes are the reigning national champions, but there is a black cloud hovering over the team. The team has lost to its biggest rival, Michigan, four years in a row.
Smith is looking to change that and told “The Athletic” earlier this week that he hates the Wolverines and guaranteed that Ohio State will not lose to Michigan for the next two years, while he is on the team. Analyst J.D. PicKell reacted to this on the On3 YouTube channel on Tuesday.
“What does this actually mean in regards to Ohio State and the game they’re going to play against Michigan in the final weekend of the regular season? Nothing,” PicKell said (Timestamp 1:05). “Jeremiah Smith saying something like that doesn’t actually mean anything for Ohio State. Why? Because they’re actually going to play the game. They have to gameplan. They’re gonna actually have the ball spotted and the clock running and all of those things.
“But I do think now, as much as this doesn’t actually mean anything, this attitude, this edge, it feels like what Ohio State needs. That’s not to say Ohio State hasn’t cared about this game or hasn’t had a ton of energy to give to the Michigan game, because that’s kind of a narrative that’s been out there for some folks.”
“I think when you talk about what Ohio State needs in a game like this, when you’ve lost to your rival the past four years. Very similar feeling I get of what Ohio State needs, relative to what Michigan needed when they got over the hump and beat Ohio State for the first time in however many years, in 2021.”
Jeremiah Smith Had a Poor Performance Against Michigan Last Season
Jeremiah Smith is promising that the Ohio State Buckeyes will not lose against Michigan for the next two years while he is on the team. However, last season, when the Buckeyes unexpectedly lost 13-10 to Michigan in the final week of the regular season, Smith had one of his worst performances of the year.
While the young star wide receiver made five receptions, on par with his normal production, he only had 35 yards and one TD. Smith only had three games all season where he had less than 50 yards, and one of them was against Michigan. So, heading into next season, Smith will be trying to prove that he can perform against Ohio State’s biggest rival.
