IN PICS: Josh Heupel’s Tennessee Unleashes Special Smokey Grey Look for 2025

Head coach Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers are coming into the 2025 season with a lot to prove. After a first-round exit in last season’s college football playoff, the Volunteers are looking to be more competitive in the SEC. However, on Thursday, they made an announcement that had nothing to do with the field.

On Thursday morning, the Tennessee Volunteers showcased a new alternate uniform for the 2025 season. It is a smokey gray uniform that pays tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces. This news was reposted by the Unnecessary Roughness X account.

“Tennessee’s Smokey Grey uniform for 2025. A tribute to the U.S. armed forces and their reputation of service and sacrifice. Thoughts?”

While this uniform looks good, it is not one that fans will see every week. It will likely only be worn once or twice this season. All other weeks, they will wear their classic orange and white uniforms. However, the Volunteers have not announced when they are going to wear their new grey alternate jerseys.

The Tennessee Volunteers Start Their Season Against Syracuse

The Tennessee Volunteers play their first game of the 2025 season on Saturday, August 30, against the Syracuse Orange. The game will be played at a neutral location. For the Volunteers, they will have a relatively easy schedule to start the season. They start their season with a neutral-site game against Syracuse before playing three straight games at home.

In those three games, two of them should be easy wins against East Tennessee State. However, their matchup against Georgia in Week 3 will be one of the Volunteers’ toughest of the season.

For Tennessee, getting off to a strong start to the season will be crucial if it wants to compete in the SEC. There are plenty of teams at the top of the SEC that should be competitive, including Georgia, Alabama and Texas.

The Volunteers will be trying to overcome an unexpected change at the quarterback position. Nico Iamaleava unexpectedly left in the spring transfer window after an NIL contract dispute. As a result, the Volunteers are heading into this season with transfer Joey Aguilar as their projected starter.

While Aguilar brings experience as a starter, he is taking a big step up in competition after playing for Appalachian State for the past two seasons. So, the Volunteers will likely need other parts of their roster to step up to compete with the best in the SEC.
