His practice session with some NBA players soon got a comment from his former high school teammate and incoming Syracuse freshman Kiyan Anthony. The two played together at Long Island Lutheran, with the son of Carmelo Anthony taking over star player duties after VJ Edgecombe graduated and went to Baylor.

“easy😂 @vj.edgecombe,” commented Kiyan Anthony on Swish Cultures’ video.

Kiyan Anthony, whose parents are actress La La Anthony and NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, formed quite a formidable team with VJ Edgecombe, with the Long Island Lutheran Crusaders being considered one of the best high school basketball teams in the country for the 2023-2024 season.

The duo led the Crusaders all the way to the 2024 Chipotle National Championships and were even seeded No. 4 overall. However, they fell to No. 5 seed Columbus, then led by incoming Duke freshmen, Cameron and Cayden Boozer, the Boozer Twins, during the first round. The tournament was eventually won by Montverde Academy, which was led at that time by Cooper Flagg, ending their season as undefeated national champions.

Philadelphia 76ers Assistant Coach TJ DiLeo Gives Honest Assessment of VJ Edgecombe After Practicing With Him

As a rookie, VJ Edgecombe is expected to show what he has got during the NBA Summer League. He has been practicing with Sixers assistant TJ DiLeo to prepare for these summer games, and the coach, who is overseeing the Sixers rookies’ Summer League journey, says he is impressed with the Bahamian (as per Sixers Wire).

“So, like, his athleticism really stands out,” the 76ers assistant said regarding Edgecombe. “Like, you see it on the defensive end, offensive end in transition, he plays super hard and he’s coachable, and he’s really trying to get the stuff we’re trying to put in early for summer league, and he’s really trying to learn that stuff, and that’s that’s awesome. He’s asking questions. He’s really—he wants to do things the right way and be a part of something good.”

VJ Edgecombe and other Philly hopefuls begin their Summer League campaign on Saturday, with their first opponents being the Utah Jazz.
