‘It’s Surreal’: Dylan Harper’s Mom Maria Shares Heartwarming Reaction to Son’s NBA Achievement

Rutgers star Dylan Harper was one of the most hyped up prospects in the 2025 NBA draft class. While Duke’s Cooper Flagg was unanimously agreed upon to be the first pick in the draft, Harper was viewed as a near lock to be the second pick. The projection came true as Harper was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the second pick in the first round on Wednesday night.

After he was drafted, ESPN spoke briefly with Harper’s mother, Maria. She was on the draft floor and expressed her excitement for seeing her son get drafted.

“It’s surreal,” Maria Harper said. “The NBA’s a very very exclusive club. He’s worked so hard to get here.”

Dylan Harper declared for the NBA draft after one season in college at Rutgers. While the Scarlet Knights did not have as much team success as they would have liked, failing to qualify for March Madness, Harper still had a fantastic season. In 29 games, he averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Dylan Harper Is Welcomed to the San Antonio Spurs by Superstar Victor Wembanyama

Dylan Harper is joining a young and exciting San Antonio Spurs team. After several decades of success, the Spurs entered a rebuild a few years ago and were quickly rewarded. They drafted French superstar Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA draft. He was arguably the most hyped prospect since LeBron James.

While he is still a young player in the league himself, Wembanyama has already taken a leadership role on the Spurs. This could be seen when he was one of the first people to call Harper on draft night. He FaceTimed Harper in an interaction that was caught on camera by the Spurs X account. Wembanyama introduced himself playfully.

“Hey, I play for the Spurs, my name is Vic,” Wembanyama said.

This prompted a laugh from Harper, who simply said:

“Yes, sir, I know who you is. My name’s Dylan. I just got drafted to the Spurs. I think I’m you’re teammate now. Ya we lit man. This is gonna be fun. ”

Wembanyama then encouraged Harper to celebrate before he starts training for the Summer League.

Victor Wembanyama is entering the third year of his NBA career.
