Victor Wembanyama Humbly Welcomes Dylan Harper to the Team Post NBA Draft Success

The San Antonio Spurs are stitching together quite a squad through the NBA Draft. Just two years ago, they drafted Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick. On Wednesday, June 24, they drafted Rutgers Scarlet Knights star Dylan Harper as their second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Shortly after the Spurs selected Harper, he received a FaceTime call from Wembanyama. The big forward started by humbly introducing himself to the New Jersey native, saying (via Overtime’s Instagram account):

“Hey, I play for the Spurs so my name’s Vic,” Wembanyama said.

While the former Rookie of the Year might have sold himself short, Harper knew exactly who he was, as he said:

“Yes sir, I know who you are. My name’s Dylan. I just got drafted to the Spurs. (0:12) I think I’m your teammate now.”

The playful exchange was posted on Overtime’s Instagram account, with the caption:

    “This feels like a 2K cutscene 😭.”

Wembanyama, who went through something similar, asked Harper to celebrate to the fullest on Wednesday because after that, they have work to do in the Summer League and the subsequent NBA season.

In his lone season at Rutgers, Harper averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.

Dylan Harper’s First Reaction After Being Drafted by Spurs

Despite having two floor generals on their team, the Spurs went ahead and drafted Dylan Harper, which means that they have belief in his talent. In his first reaction after getting selected, 19-year-old Harper showed optimism in the Spurs’ young core.

“I think when you play with a bunch of great players, it just brings the best out of you,” Harper told ESPN. “They got a great young core over there. I’m just ready to get in there and make an impact anywhere I can with those guys.”

The Spurs have been successful with their picks in the draft. Wembanyama turned out to be a massive hit and even last year’s fourth-overall pick, Stephon Castle, won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Harper’s selection was the Spurs’ third consecutive draft with a top-four pick.

However, Harper might have to wait for some time before getting a permanent starting role on the San Antonio Spurs. The team already has Castle and has also traded for De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings. However, as Harper said, he’s bound to learn a good deal with future greats all around him.
