On a recent episode of The Ringer’s Higher Learning podcast, Dawn Staley tested her knowledge of millennial pop culture, unintentionally resulting in some comedy gold. She was tasked with identifying rappers under 30, and in the most obvious way, the 55-year-old coach struggled, confusing one of the young Rappers with an R&B Legend.
Dawn Stanley Fails To Name Young Rappers
The segment began with host Van Lathan playfully testing Staley’s knowledge of today’s rap scene. With her players often blasting the latest tracks in the locker room, Lathan figured Staley might recognize a few names. The first few guesses were rough; she didn’t know Playboi Carti and missed Texas rapper Dave Blunts entirely.

Staley did identify Sexyy Red, the rapper who recently got a lot of attention thanks to her new track with Bruno Mars. However, that was the only win she managed to bag. The real highlight came when Lathan showed her a photo of Latto, the 26-year-old Atlanta rapper who’s been making waves since her 2020 hit “B*tch from da Souf.”
Staley squinted at the image. After some hesitation, she ventured a guess: “She’s too young to be Faith Evans though, right?” and then hit the ground laughing. Alyssa Stephens aka Latto, is a rising star known for her bold lyrics and recent Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2023.
On the other hand, Faith Evans is a 51-year-old R&B icon from the ‘90s, famous for hits like “Soon as I Get Home.” The generational gap was evident and very hilarious. “I was crineeee,” one fan commented on X, setting the mood for the rest.
The clip, shared on X, quickly gained a lot of attention. “Too young to be Faith Evans… and now I can’t unsee it!!” one user wrote. Another chimed in, “Dawn is funny. Not Faith Evans.” The mix-up sparked a wave of memes, with some joking that Latto and Evans now share an unexpected connection, “Now I can’t unsee Latto as Faith,” a follower shared.

Staley’s rap game may need some work, but such fumbles will never be able to wane her legacy in the history of Basketball.
