Jon Gruden Shows Love to Delaware Blue Hens

Gruden was all smiles when unboxing the package from Delaware; it had polos, T-shirts, caps, and even a Blue Hens helmet. And well, he didn’t hold back on the praise while showing off the goods.

“Look at the Delaware helmet, lots of people say it looks like Michigan, well I say Michigan looks like the Delaware Blue Hens.”

Gruden recognized some of the legendary figures tied to Delaware football. He gave a special nod to Rich Gannon, his former QB, during his time as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He also showed respect to former Blue Hens coach Tubby Raymond, who built a legacy at Delaware from 1966 to 2001, racking up an impressive 300–119–3 record.

Delaware will begin a new football chapter as a member of Conference USA with a Sept. 20 road matchup in Miami against Florida International at the newly named Pitbull Stadium. It’s the first of eight conference clashes for the Blue Hens as they transition into the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) from the FCS ranks.

Delaware’s first home conference game is scheduled for Oct. 3 against Western Kentucky. Other home dates include a showdown with Middle Tennessee on Oct. 22, a Nov. 8 matchup against Louisiana Tech, and a season-ending tilt on Nov. 29 against UTEP, which will be playing its final CUSA game.

On the road, the Blue Hens face reigning conference champions Jacksonville State on Oct. 15, Liberty on Nov. 1, and Sam Houston State on Nov. 15, the latter being the former program of current Delaware HC Ryan Carty.

Notably absent from Delaware’s 2025 league schedule are New Mexico State, Kennesaw State, and Missouri State. However, Delaware has perhaps the toughest slate in the conference, as it’s the only team that’ll face all five of CUSA’s 2024 bowl qualifiers: Liberty, Western Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Sam Houston, and Louisiana Tech.

The nonconference lineup features a season-opening home game against Delaware State on Aug. 28, road trips to Colorado (Sept. 6) and Wake Forest (Nov. 22), and a home game against UConn on Sept. 13.

With Missouri State joining, CUSA will expand to 12 teams in 2025, each playing eight conference games, four at home and four away. Although Delaware wrapped up its FCS era with a strong 9-2 record in 2024, it was ineligible for the playoffs due to the transition.

Looking ahead, the Blue Hens won’t be able to compete in the 2025 CUSA championship game, but they can still claim the regular-season title. As for a bowl game? They’re not technically eligible, but Delaware could find itself in the conversation if they reach six wins and there’s a shortage of qualifying teams.
