Dawn Staley Shouts Out a Fever Star

The head coach of the South Carolina Gamecock women’s basketball team left a record of all these activities on her Instagram profile. She also took the opportunity to sing the praises of an Indiana Fever star. For a change, we’re not talking about Caitlin Clark.

The player Staley praised as a potential WNBA MVP was Aliyah Boston, who played under her at South Carolina from 2019-2023.

“Sitting here signing every one of them while watching @aliyah.boston build her resume for @WNBA MVP, most improved, first team all WNBA, etc. Get ‘em AB!!” Dawn posted on Instagram.

Boston has certainly put together an impressive resume in her still very short career. She can already boast of being the 2022 NCAA Champion, the 2022 Naismith Player of the Year, the 2023 WNBA Draft No. 1 overall pick, the 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year, and a 2023 WNBA All-Star Game player.

Staley is currently on a book tour to promote her book, which has already stopped in New York and Philadelphia. On May 29, she will be in Columbia, South Carolina, to talk to readers about her book.

“Uncommon Favor” tells the story of Coach Staley, including her development as a player and coach, as well as other lessons she has learned in her life outside of basketball.

Dawn Staley is one of the most accomplished figures in basketball history, excelling both as a player and a coach.

As a player, she was a three-time NCAA All-American at the University of Virginia (1988–1992), leading her team to three Final Fours. She then went on to have a legendary professional career, playing in the WNBA for the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets, earning six All-Star selections.

Internationally, she was a three-time Olympic gold medalist (1996, 2000, 2004) and a two-time USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year, cementing her status as one of the greatest point guards of her era.

As a coach, Staley has built an even greater legacy. After successful stints at Temple University (2000–2008), where she won multiple conference titles, she took over at the University of South Carolina in 2008 and transformed the program into a powerhouse.

Under her leadership, the Gamecocks have won three NCAA Championships (2017, 2022, 2024), made seven Final Fours, and dominated the SEC with multiple regular-season and tournament titles.

Staley has also coached Team USA, leading them to a gold medal at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics.

Her impact on the game—both on and off the court—has earned her numerous accolades, including Naismith Coach of the Year honors and induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame (2013).
