Cade Klubnik’s Clemson Breakout Puts Him on Track for No. 1 Draft Spot

Clemson hasn’t had a quarterback selected in the NFL Draft since 2021, when Trevor Lawrence was taken No. 1 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Nearly four years have passed since then.

However, that streak could soon end. According to ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid, Klubnik is now projected to be a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. ESPN’s Jordan Reid believes Klubnik could follow in Lawrence’s footsteps and become the next Clemson quarterback selected at the very top of the draft.

After his standout 2024 season, many now believe Klubnik is a lock for the first round. If he doesn’t go No. 1 overall, some in the draft community may consider it a surprise.

He threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns, completing 63.4% of his passes while tossing just six interceptions. His ability to push the ball downfield was evident, as he ranked among the top quarterbacks in completions of 20+ yards.

Given these stats, he is already heading into the 2025 season as the best quarterback in college football. One CSN reporter noted:

“It’s only May, and to me, it’s clear that Cade Klubnik is the best quarterback in next year’s class. He made a big leap in the 2024 season, where he increased his passing touchdowns from the previous season by 17 and decreased his interceptions from nine to six… I expect him to take an even bigger leap in 2025 and be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.”

His performance last season already made him eligible for the NFL Draft, but Klubnik chose to stay with the Tigers for one more year. That decision not only boosts Clemson’s chances but also gives him a chance to solidify his top-pick status. If he delivers a similar season this year, being the No. 1 overall pick in 2026 may already be written in stone.
