Georgia’s quarterback competition is heating up, and Gunner Stockton is emerging as the frontrunner. While Ryan Puglisi brings undeniable talent, analysts believe Stockton has the tools, leadership, and NFL-level understanding to be Georgia’s next starting quarterback.
Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback and ESPN analyst Aaron Murray recently joined On3’s J.D. PicKell to break down the Bulldogs’ quarterback room. Murray’s insights suggest that Stockton has a clear advantage, citing his command of the offense and ability to elevate his teammates on the field.

Gunner Stockton’s Skillset Has Experts Confident He Can Start for Georgia
As the offseason rolls on, the buzz around the Georgia Bulldogs is a mix of hope and hesitation. Many experts still see Georgia as one of the most talented teams in college football. But after last season’s slip, much of that uncertainty revolves around quarterback Gunner Stockton, who will be Georgia’s full-time starter for the first time.
Looking at the numbers, Stockton made a solid case in 2024. He threw for 440 yards with 45 completions, one touchdown, and one interception. His quarterback rating of 94.48 shows he’s managing the game with maturity. Even more impressive is his ability to read defenses and make smart adjustments before the snap. That’s something his main competition, Ryan Puglisi, is still working on.
Former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray shared his thoughts on the situation. He believes Stockton is ready to lead. “If Gunnar is going to be the guy, from all accounts and from everyone I’ve talked to, he is going to be QB1,” Murray said. While Puglisi might have more raw power, Stockton’s deep understanding of the offense gives him the upper hand.
Murray also reminded fans that being a great quarterback isn’t just about having a strong arm or fast feet. It’s about making decisions, leading the huddle, and helping the entire team rise.
Then the ex-Georgia QB compared this to his own experience, saying, “I’m 6’1″, maybe. Some people say I’m 6”, I’ll go with 6’1″. 6’1″, average arm strength. But I could get everyone else around me to play at a high level.” He stressed that this is exactly why Stockton stands out more than Ryan Puglisi, because he lifts up the whole team.
Stockton’s command of the offense and ability to make pre-snap adjustments set him apart. “Can he put his offensive line into position to pick up a backside corner blitz or to change the mic to the wheel linebacker or a hot route for a receiver?” Murray said. Those fine details are what turn a good quarterback into a great one.

Ultimately, Murray believes Stockton’s experience and leadership make him the best fit for Georgia’s starting role, as he knows the system and can put his teammates in the best position to succeed on the field.
