Led by the well-known and controversial Deion Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes are expected to have a strong season next year. But not everyone agrees that his strategy can ensure ongoing success.
A recent anonymous analysis from a Big 12 coach described Colorado as “still a circus” and expressed doubts about the team’s ability to compete with the best.

Colorado Football Under Deion Sanders: Progress and Controversy
Since Deion Sanders became head coach, Colorado’s football program has undergone significant change.
In just two seasons, Sanders elevated the Buffaloes from one of the lowest-ranked Power Five teams to near Big 12 championship contenders.
Yet, while the system has improved, it has been scrutinized and criticized with great attention. Often, the media portrays the program as unorganized and some experts cite distractions and player discipline as reasons for this.
The anonymous coach, speaking to Athlon Sports, expressed skepticism about Colorado’s ability to transition smoothly into the Big 12. He stated that the Buffaloes are very open to adding new players from the transfer portal, but these transfers have made it hard for the team to form a tight offensive line.
“They’ve turned over a ton in the portal, and they’re trying to make it out like it’s a competition-based result, but they’re really going to struggle on the offensive line because of how Deion manages the culture there,” the coach stated. “This is a roster with big holes and a lot of questions.”
Colorado’s 2025 Outlook
Criticisms aside, Colorado has done a lot to be ready for the coming season. The Buffaloes will have a quarterback battle between Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and five-star freshman Julian Lewis, with Salter bringing experience and Lewis expected to be a future star.
Replacing Travis Hunter, the Heisman-winning receiver and defensive back, will be a challenge. Still, the secondary in Colorado remains tough thanks to the return of DJ McKinney, Carter Stoutmire and Preston Hodge. Drelon Miller and Omarion Miller will handle the receiver position, helping the team recover from Hunter’s loss.
Sanders signed a five-year, $54 million deal in March 2025, signaling that he will continue leading the Buffaloes. While preparing for the upcoming season, the team will concentrate on building on their recent achievements and identifying points discussed by critics as important areas to improve.
