Sherrone Moore’s Michigan Football Making Bold Push for Top 5 Class With Visits Lined Up for 5-Star Recruits

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has the Wolverines surging on the recruiting trail, aggressively positioning the program to land a top-five national class. Following a rough start to Moore’s debut season, Michigan has responded with renewed momentum.

Despite an uneven 8-5 campaign that featured a frustrating quarterback situation and offensive struggles, the team ended on a high note by defeating Alabama in its bowl game. Now, with elite recruits visiting Ann Arbor, Moore appears intent on ensuring the program never endures another season like 2024, both on the field and in recruiting battles.

Michigan Football Eyes Top 5 Recruiting Class Under Sherrone Moore

Michigan football is building serious recruiting momentum under head coach Sherrone Moore, with clear signs pointing toward a potential top-five national class. The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 18 in the country, but their recent efforts on the trail—combined with elite official visits scheduled in June—have analysts projecting a significant climb.

    As On3’s Josh Newberg said,

“Michigan is starting to gain some steam, maybe another top 10 class.”

A big part of that rise has been the commitment of tight end Matt Ludwig, a top target who chose Michigan over heavyweights like Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Georgia and Tennessee.

“This is one of their top overall targets on the board… certainly the number one tight end that they were after,” said Steve Wiltfong. “A-plus athlete at the position,” he added, noting Ludwig’s potential to follow Michigan’s recent NFL draft success at tight end.

The Wolverines are casting a wide net in pursuit of blue-chip talent. Among their top priorities is five-star running back Savion Hiter from Virginia, who has Michigan in his top four alongside Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee.

“If Michigan was drafting this 2026 recruiting class… Savion Hiter would be their number one pick,” Wiltfong noted.

Hiter is set to return to Ann Arbor for an official visit the weekend of June 13, and Michigan remains a front-runner in that race.

“Michigan is the mainstay in that group,” said Wiltfong.

Other running back targets include Amari Latimer, an On3 Top 300 prospect from Georgia, and Carson Baker, a 200-pound back with sub-11 speed in the 100-meter dash. Meanwhile, the Wolverines are also heavily involved with five-star edge rusher Carter Meadows, who holds Michigan among his final four schools.

Meadows “had a great visit there in the spring,” Wiltfong said, adding that “him and his family love the Wolverines.”

The offensive line remains a priority, as always, with Michigan battling for names like Malachi Lee, Le Delaneyo and Kevin Obot, the latter of whom spent four days on campus this spring.

“Michigan definitely moved the needle there,” Wiltfong remarked.

After a dismal 2024 season in which Michigan ranked 105th in pass success rate and 123rd in EPA per dropback, Moore’s focus on quarterbacks is clear. The Wolverines already have 17 scholarship offers out to quarterbacks in future classes, signaling a clear attempt to correct last season’s offensive woes.

Still, Moore’s aggressive approach to recruiting has Michigan positioned to rejoin college football’s elite. As Newberg put it:

“They want to keep it rolling. They got their sights set on five stars. Blue chippers from coast to coast.”

However, concerns remain at wide receiver. Jaylen Pile, a three-star, is the only commit at the position, raising questions about Michigan’s plans to surround its future quarterbacks with enough speed and playmaking.
