Who Is Joan Beringer? A Look at the French Standout Turning Heads Ahead of 2025 NBA Draft

Joan Beringer is one of those talents who quietly move under the radar, but he could end up being a steal for whichever team drafts him in June’s NBA Draft.

It is relatively easy to rate and analyze NCAA prospects coming into the league, as there are many opportunities for them to showcase their talents in front of scouts and analysts. However, the international waters get tricky, as some of the players might not attract major attention but are very solid talents. Let’s take a deeper look at this French superstar.

Who is French 2025 NBA Draft Prospect Joan Beringer?

The NBA’s French presence is expanding every year, with the league already boasting talents like Rudy Gobert, Victor Wembanyama, Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, and Bilal Coulibaly, among others. It looks like Joan Beringer is the next one up.

Earlier in April, the 6’11 center declared for the 2025 NBA Draft and has been attracting attention from NBA scouts and analysts since. He’s earned comparisons to four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert.

“It’s been my dream to play in the NBA,” Beringer told ESPN. “It’s a good moment to go. I want to say thank you to my teammates. They made everything a lot easier for me.”

Still, it is reported that Beringer didn’t grow up dreaming of NBA stardom. Until three years ago, the 18-year-old French center was a soccer player. But after a growth spurt made cleats impossible to find, Beringer picked up a basketball and began hooping on the outdoor courts near his home in Strasbourg, France.

In 2022, Beringer joined SIG Strasbourg and played for their U18 squad in the LNB Espoirs league, averaging 4.1 points in the 22/23 season, then 17.4 points in 23/24. He also played for the U21 prospects team and averaged 9.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.

Beringer played the 24/25 season for Cedevita Olimpija in Slovenia, where he averaged 4.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game across 51 games.
