Why New NC State Forward Darrion Williams Might Be the Most Important Transfer in the ACC

In college basketball, the right transfer can completely change a program’s trajectory. But you can’t always say that a single transfer will reshape an entire team’s future—unless that player is former Texas Tech standout Darrion Williams.

Williams became one of the most impactful transfers in the ACC this offseason. The 6’6″ junior forward ultimately chose Will Wade and the Wolfpack over Kansas despite also drawing strong interest from Ohio State and Washington.

Darrion Williams’ Commitment to NC State Could Be Crucial for Wolfpack

Few transfers in college basketball carry as much weight as Darrion Williams’ move to NC State. The former Texas Tech star averaged 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists last season and was one of the top names in the transfer portal.

His commitment to the Wolfpack marks a major shift in the ACC, with NC State now looking like a serious contender under new head coach Will Wade.

Williams, a two-time All-Big 12 selection, had initially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft; however, he later withdrew his name and chose to return to college basketball. He experimented with both the NBA Draft and the transfer portal, but ultimately decided to pursue his collegiate career instead of going pro this year.

He shared his commitment on Twitter with a heartfelt message, noting, “Thank you, Tech, for everything! I wouldn’t trade these last two years for anything. Lubbock is a second home to me and will always have a special place in my heart ❤️🖤”

Before joining Texas Tech, Williams played at Nevada, where he was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year. Coming off a breakout year in Lubbock, he became one of the most in-demand players in the portal, ultimately choosing NC State over powerhouse programs like Kansas and Ohio State.

Williams was a key player in Texas Tech’s Elite Eight run and delivered big performances throughout the NCAA Tournament.

Talking about what he can add to the Wolfpack, his ability to score efficiently, rebound aggressively, and create plays makes him a game-changer for NC State. The team aims to recover from a disappointing 12-19 season, which was so challenging that it led to the dismissal of coach Kevin Keatts.

Beyond his individual talent, Williams’ commitment elevates NC State’s roster. He joins a group of seven transfer additions that Wade has brought in to reshape the program.

With Williams leading the charge, the Wolfpack are expected to compete at the top of the ACC and make a strong push for the NCAA Tournament.

Now that he’s officially committed, the hype is very real. All eyes will be on Williams to see if he can be the leader NC State needs and the true executioner on the court they’ve been waiting for.
