UNC head coach Bill Belichick has been in the news lately for matters unrelated to football, but it appears the coach has been quietly working on improving his team’s future. He made significant progress in that regard by securing the commitment of Grayson quarterback Travis Burgess for the 2026 class.
According to the 247Sports Composite ranking, Burgess is currently considered to be the No. 501 overall player, No. 30 quarterback, and No. 59 player in the state of Georgia for the 2026 recruiting class.

“Coach Belichick will turn this program around in the next year or two,” quarterback prospect Travis Burgess said Wednesday when committing to UNC over Auburn, NC State and Wisconsin, per Steve Wiltfong of On3. “And I want to be a part of that legacy and help turn it around! The TB legacy will continue, go Tar Heels.”
“Just the coaches at UNC, I mean all three programs have good coaches but Coach Belichick took me in the office and went over my film play by play with me and to have a legend take time to break down my film and personally talk to me about a plan to develop me is what really helped me decide after talking to my mom and dad,” Burgess explained.
Burgess led Grayson to a 14-1 record last year as a junior. The 6’5, 210-pound signal-caller managed to throw 2,255 yards and 23 touchdowns for the offense, also adding another 596 yards and four more scores on the ground.
After committing to UNC, Burgess will hope to join the list of quality quarterbacks who have played in Chapel Hill recently. Since 2019, UNC quarterbacks have thrown over 2,400 yards and 15 touchdowns per season, with Sam Howell and Drake Maye producing the bulk of these numbers. Howell passed for 10,283 yards and 92 touchdowns as a three-year starter, with Maye following suit with 7,929 yards and 63 touchdowns as a two-year starter.

Jacolby Criswell led the Tar Heels with 2,459 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, and South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez will likely lead the offense before Burgess’ arrival next year. Last season, Lopez passed for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Jaguars.
