The world of youth sports, particularly in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) programs, has become increasingly polluted by the behavior of overbearing parents or guardians. Some parents verbally abuse referees while some even get physical with refs atimes. Incidents like this create a toxic environment and sets poor example for young athletes.
We’ve seen videos of parents disrupting AAU games because calls are not in favour of their children or wards. A video of a spectator assaulting a ref from a few years ago has resurfaced and it has people questioning what governing boards are going to do to reduce such incidents.

In 2021, a conflict at a girl’s basketball game ended with the referee being body slammed after an altercation with a spectator.

This type of stuff needs to stop

The incident occurred during a weekend game between Indiana Elite and Baylor Basketball (not connected to Baylor University) at the Pacers Athletic Center in the Indianapolis suburb of Westfield.
With Baylor losing late in the first quarter, a Baylor coach argued with a referee about a call during a stoppage in play and started to leave the court. Baylor players picked up their bags and also started to leave the court. A spectator walked across the court from the stands while recording the referee on his phone. The spectator appeared to say something to the official, who responded by slapping the spectator. The two then exchanged blows.
A Baylor player also joined the fracas and repeatedly attacked the referee before other spectators stepped in to stop the fight but it wasn’t before the referee was body slammed by the spectator who initiated the whole fracas. It was reported that the Baylor team was banned from future events.
AAU governing bodies should establish a strict code of conduct that emphasizes respect for officials, opponents and teammates. They should also offer training and support to referees to enable them manage conflicts and difficult situations. Aggressive parents or guardians must also be held accountable for their transgressions.
