When Mike Norvell was appointed as Florida State’s head coach in 2020, he was tasked with rebuilding and resetting a culture that was once the gold standard in college football. The Seminoles had winning seasons in 2022 and 2023 but suffered a serious decline in 2024, finishing with a 2-10 record.
Florida State’s collapse wasn’t because of talent, as the team is full of talented players, except at the quarterback position. DJ Uiagalelei spent his final college year in Tallahassee and was expected to fire the team to glory, but unfortunately, his tenure was a disaster. He would later end up undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Florida State’s QB Dilemma Looms Large As Mike Norvell Navigates 2025
In stark contrast to the DJ Uiagalelei era, the Seminoles succeeded with Jordan Travis as quarterback before his unfortunate injury. Heading into 2025, Florida State has four quarterbacks, and HC Mike Norvell is under pressure as the program tries to avoid a repeat of the Uiagalelei situation.
Thomas Castellanos, Brock Glenn, Kevin Sperry, and Jaylen King are the QB options for the next season, and while each of them offers something different, none of them has shown that they’re capable of bringing success to Florida State yet. College Football Analyst, Scott Fisher, spoke about the situation on his YouTube channel.
“There was a ridiculous amount of hype for DJ, but as always, he ended up falling apart,” Fisher said.
“We do need to talk about last year’s team. After losing their Heisman quarterback, Jordan Travis, to injury, we saw both Tate Rodemaker and Brock Glenn play at the end of the 2023 season, and neither of them were any good.”
Jaylen King is currently the wild card of this four-man group of quarterbacks for the new season. He was a four-year starter in high school with over 3,000 total yards but a meandering college path. His numbers are barely impressive for the level he played at.
“He didn’t put up great numbers at a low level, but he’s seen as a dual-threat player who projects as a depth piece and somebody with a lot of potential.” Fisher pointed out.
Kevin Sperry hasn’t played a college snap yet, but his game is defined by vision and athleticism. He has a high ceiling, but he might not be ready to lead the team yet. Brock Glenn is a familiar face, but he was part of the recent struggles, and he hasn’t shown enough to justify the starting shirt.
According to Fisher, Thomas Castellanos is a dynamic quarterback, but he comes with extra baggage.

“He was one of those players that high school coaches could not wait to get on their team,” Fisher said. But baggage follows him. “There still are some question marks around his game. How good of a quarterback can he be, and more importantly, how good of a leader can he be? He ended up losing his starting job and quit on the team.”
Regardless of his baggage, Coach Mike Norvell seems to believe in the Boston College transfer, and he’ll probably own the starting spot for next season.
