Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer isn’t holding back his opinion on one of college football’s most high-profile transfers this offseason, Nico Iamaleava. The former Tennessee quarterback shocked many when he opted to leave Knoxville for UCLA. Meyer, speaking on The Triple Option, believes it’s a decision Iamaleava may look back on with regret.

Urban Meyer Questions Nico Iamaleava’s Decision To Leave Tennessee for UCLA
“Nico is the most famous of the stories out there,” Meyer said. “Where I always tell people this is gonna be one of those deals a couple of years from now, they’re gonna say, whether it be father, whether it be third uncle, or whether it be an agent, ‘Now, tell me again why I did that?’”
It’s a move that has raised eyebrows for more reasons than one. At Tennessee, Iamaleava was projected to lead a team on the cusp of College Football Playoff contention. UCLA, on the other hand, is in the midst of a rebuild, one where the quarterback will have to learn a new system quickly and adapt to a program not yet ready for national prominence.
From a performance standpoint, Iamaleava was highly regarded going into the transfer portal. 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford ranked him No. 19 on his list of the top 50 quarterbacks in college football, showing just how much talent he brings to the Bruins. But even with that talent, the situation around him is dramatically different than it was at Tennessee. The Bruins will be leaning heavily on Iamaleava’s raw ability, but he now faces a longer road to national relevance, and potentially a tougher path to NFL exposure.
Financially, the move may not favor Iamaleava either. At Tennessee, reports indicated he was making between $2.2 million and $2.5 million annually through NIL deals. At UCLA, that number reportedly drops to somewhere just north of $1.5 million. While still substantial, it’s a notable decrease for a player who held out of Tennessee spring practices demanding $4 million, a controversy that ultimately led to his departure.

Whether Iamaleava’s decision was influenced by family, advisors, or NIL negotiations, Meyer’s warning echoes a broader concern in college football today, that young players are making career-altering decisions with incomplete guidance. The transfer portal era has empowered athletes like never before, but it has also introduced new risks and outside pressures.
Iamaleava still has every opportunity to succeed at UCLA. His talent is undeniable, and the Bruins now have a top-20 quarterback to build around. But as Meyer suggests, time will tell if this was a career-defining opportunity, or a moment the young quarterback ends up questioning down the line.
