Mother’s Day Throwback: The Draft Day Moment Shared Between Amen and Ausar Thompson and Their Mother

It’s worth remembering the moment that Amen and Ausar Thompson shared with their mother during the 2023 NBA Draft.

“I can’t even explain how proud I am,” their mother, Maya Wilson said. “Just amazing. Just happy to be here to share this with these amazing, handsome young men.”

The moment serves as a reminder of the backbone that mothers provide and the hard work Wilson put into raising the two twins.

They have represented her well, turning themselves into excellent basketball players in the NBA but, more importantly, high-character individuals.

Their career arc on the floor has been eerily similar, as both players are extremely athletic and excel on the defensive end of the court. Both, despite being 6’6″ (Ausar) and 6’7″ (Amen), are best playing around the basket due to a lack of jump shot.

That doesn’t mean they haven’t excelled in their second season in the NBA.

Amen made a big jump from Year 1 to Year 2, averaging 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 55.7% from the floor. He was the defensive focal point for the Houston Rockets during their seven-game series with the Golden State Warriors, at times shutting down superstar guard Stephen Curry.

Ausar had a solid sophomore season as well, putting up 10.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists on 53.5% from the floor. He guarded New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, making him work very hard during their six game series with the Detroit Pistons.

Both have bright futures as players and individuals off the court, led by their upbringing with their mother.
