Curt Cignetti Teases Surprise Change for Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza This Season

In discussing with Greg McElroy how success can breed more success, Curt Cignetti, Indiana Football Coach, hinted at a surprise change for Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza this season.

Cignetti joined McElroy on the Always College Football podcast. He mentioned how the playoff season in 2024 has allowed them to introduce some big names.

The Hoosiers had a rough run during their 2023 campaign. However, their 2024 season, led by head coach Cignetti, ended with an impressive 11-2 record. According to the head coach, such a record helped Indiana land some big names, such as Pat Coogan and Mendoza.

Speaking of Mendoza, the quarterback’s arrival can make a big difference in the Hoosiers’ offense this year. The head coach has pointed towards a surprise change for Indiana’s new quarterback.

Indiana HC Curt Cignetti Hints At A New Offensive Plan

There is no doubt that under Cignetti’s offense, their newly acquired quarterback will thrive, as his arm strength is unworldly and he can make some excellent short-yardage runs. But while the college football world is busy trying to understand how Mendoza will be used by the Hoosiers, Cignetti’s plan might catch everyone off guard.

Speaking to McElroy on the Always College Football podcast, he shared how Fernando’s passing precision and mobility can be the strongest asset to the Hoosiers’ offense.

” I think with him, you are going to get some of it (Dual Threat) without even calling it…He is a big guy. he’s got good movement, quick release, and can make all the throws. He’s accurate, also. Throws the ball on the run really well,” Curt said while addressing Mendoza’s passing accuracy and mobility.

Even though Rourke lacked mobility, the quarterback passed for almost 3,042 yards, 29 touchdowns, and five interceptions in his only season at Bloomington.

Mendoza is a quarterback with a different skill set. Even though he is not considered a dual threat, he gained 105 yards on 87 carries and two rushing TDs. As per Cignetti, he will also be played differently than we have seen with Rourke.

” We moved Curtis 0.25% of the time last year…so everybody knew where he is launching it from..we’ll move that launch point a little bit more this year and you’ll probably see a quarterback run here and there..”- said Cignetti.

After the inclusion of Jonathan Brady, the transition can be even smoother for Mendoza. Besides the chemistry, Brady’s arrival will add depth to the WR room, requiring experience.

After the performance last season, the expectations for the Indiana Hoosiers have been high. And by the looks of it, they are ready for it!
