Breaking Down the Slate: What to Expect in 2025
The Bulls kick off the season in style at home against Boise State on Aug. 28, a Thursday night game that will establish the tone for the rest of the campaign. The Broncos have been the gold standard for Group of Five success for a long time now, so this is a proving ground for where USF is now under head coach Alex Golesh’s leadership.
Then there are two brutal road games: a visit to The Swamp to play the Florida Gators, followed by a battle in Miami against the Hurricanes.
These consecutive showdowns with Power Five behemoths will challenge USF’s toughness, depth, and offensive firepower. If the Bulls can even split these two, the momentum going into the rest of the schedule could be enormous.
South Carolina State is in town next—a welcome respite and excellent opportunity for the Bulls to get some momentum before they reach the heart of their American Athletic Conference (AAC) schedule. That run starts with Friday evening games against Charlotte and a game at North Texas.
Home games against UTSA and Florida Atlantic are also obvious swing games for the Bulls’ bowl hopes. Florida Atlantic has had glimpses of competitiveness, while UTSA has been a force in the AAC. Elsewhere, road games against Memphis, Navy, and UAB will be no cakewalk, especially with the Tigers’ recent renaissance and Navy’s pesky triple-option attack.
USF finishes up the regular season at home against Rice, a team that’s gotten better but is still beatable. If everything falls into place, that last game might be the one that sends the Bulls to a postseason bowl.
Bullish on the Bulls? Why 2025 Might Be Special
The hype over USF football is real. It’s based on the development fans have witnessed under Alex Golesh. Coming off a promising 2024, there’s the feeling that this team may finally have it all going at the same time. Quarterback Byrum Brown returns as a breakout option, and the team has been developing depth on both sides of the ball.
With increasing experience in Golesh’s up-tempo offensive scheme, look for the Bulls to test defenses, set the tempo, and cause teams to pay in the air. On defense, anticipate enhanced linebacker performance and a tenacious front seven searching to unsettle opposing quarterbacks.
“We’ve developed a culture that competes on a daily basis,” Golesh told the Bulls during spring practice. “Now it’s all about execution and thinking we belong in every contest.”
And with this schedule? Faith is essential. The Bulls cannot afford to sleepwalk through any week. Each opponent brings a new challenge, from SEC speed to AAC toughness and all points in between.
Fans are taking notice as well. Ticket sales have been climbing steadily, and The Bullpen at Raymond James Stadium will likely be rowdier than ever. If USF can win at home and pilfer a couple of games on the road, there’s a real shot at 8+ wins.
This 2025 USF football schedule is not merely a calendar—this is a proving ground. From high-level showdowns with Florida and Miami to conference battles that could set the tone for their bowl hopes, every weekend is a must-see. The Bulls have the talent, the coach, and the firepower. Now, they simply need the execution.
