The New England Patriots selected 11 players in the 2025 NFL Draft and recently assigned official jersey numbers to each rookie for training camp. Among them, TreVeyon Henderson, the Patriots’ second-round pick, received jersey No. 32.
With this number, the rising star is preparing to honor Devin McCourty’s legacy, as it was the same number McCourty wore during his three Super Bowl wins. However, some fans think the Patriots should retire this number before anyone else.

Devin McCourty’s No. 32 Sparks Controversy in Foxborough Fans
McCourty, a cornerback-turned-safety, was known for his strong leadership and imaginative play. During his 13-year career, his presence in the defensive backfield helped the New England Patriots win three Super Bowls. When he retired in 2023, he left a powerful legacy, symbolized by his No. 32 jersey.
The Patriots’ No. 38 overall pick, Henderson, has been assigned that same number. Although the former Ohio State running back doesn’t play the same position McCourty did, there’s hope that he can make the number his own. If Henderson creates his legacy with No. 32, it could be an incredible moment for the team and its fans.
How does wearing the same number as a three-time Super Bowl champion feel? It’s probably exciting but also a little overwhelming. After the rookie received the number, the former NFL safety took to Twitter to react, saying, “Can’t wait to see real speed in that 32 jersey.” But Patriots fans do not feel the same about the rookie running back. They think the team should have retired the number instead of giving it to a rookie so soon.

One fan on Instagram wrote, “Lol so this a thing now? Having somebody take your number as a rookie?” Another added, “Kinda shocked this wasn’t a Pats HOF number retired! But I guess it’s been enough time.” One simply said, “Too soon.” And another suggested, “Nah, we gotta retire this number.”

Still, there were a few positive words. One fan commented, “That young man is gonna be a game changer.” But overall, the reaction leaned heavily toward disappointment. Many believe retiring McCourty’s number would have been the most respectful move. Letting someone else wear it, especially a rookie, doesn’t make sense.
