Could Arkansas Freshman Darius Acuff Be the Best Point Guard in College Basketball Next Season?

Five-star point guard recruit Darius Acuff is set to hit the college basketball scene next season, after the Detroit, Michigan native committed to the Arkansas Razorbacks last year. Acuff also had offers from Kansas and Michigan, but he’ll spend his freshman year in the SEC getting coached by John Calipari.

Acuff not only brings skill to the hardwood — he’ll be bringing along a reputation of being one of the best point guards in the recruiting class. But could he be the best point guard in the country next season?

Does Arkansas Freshman Darius Acuff Have A Case As The Best Point Guard in College Basketball?

According to On3’s industry rankings, the five-star recruit is the ninth-best overall player from the 2025 Recruitment class and the second-best Point Guard behind Mikel Brown Jr., who committed to the Louisville Cardinals.

Despite ranking only second in ON3’s industry rankings, many argue that there is potential for the Arkansas freshman to be the best point guard in college basketball next season.

“Darius Acuff steps on the court with a swagger. He has long arms and a purposeful handle. Acuff is a capable scorer from multiple levels, showing deep range off the bounce or the catch. He is comfortable pulling up in the mid-range, and he has a crafty bag around the rim,” recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw wrote in his official scouting report.

Acuff’s ability score from all three levels separates him from most other Point guards. According to some, the incoming Freshman averaged 20 points per game for IMG Academy.

Mikel Brown Jr, the only point guard ranked higher than him in this year’s recruitment class, averaged 29.6 points for DME Academy, earning him a spot on the McDonald’s All-American team.

“Acuff is quicker than fast. He has a good first step, getting to his spots, but he needs to continue to work on his burst around the basket. Acuff is a solid passer,” Shaw also wrote in his scouting report.

While Acuff may not have the statistics in his favor regarding the competition with Mikel Brown Jr, what he does have going into his first season in college basketball is the backing of his head coach, John Calipari.

“When it was first announced that the 5-star recruit would be committing to Arkansas, the Razorbacks’ head coach posted a long message of excitement about being able to coach such an exciting prospect.”

“Darius is an unbelievable playmaking guard who can score. He has unbelievable skills as a playmaker and at creating his own shot,” the Razorbacks’ coach explained.

“What I loved was his toughness and will to win. The first time I saw him, I knew that was the guy for me! On every opportunity I got to see him play, he never disappointed. Excited for our fans to get to watch him play in Bud Walton Arena!”

Acuff will have to challenge the standard set by Boogie Fland before his injury in his Freshman season before he can challenge for the title of the best Point Guard in College Basketball.

Flang, who is set to depart Arkansas, averaged 13.5 points per game before his injury. He last played for the Razorbacks in their 83-85 Overtime loss to the Texas Red Raiders.
