Shedeur Sanders Lands No. 12 Jersey with Browns, Same as Travis Hunter with Jaguars

Earlier today, NFL reporter Ari Meirov shared the news of the Cleveland Browns’ numbers for their drafted rookies with a post on X.

The most anticipated was Sanders, who wore No. 2 in college with the Colorado Buffaloes. But with that number being worn by DeAndre Carter, who is on the Cleveland roster, he had to switch it up.

He decided to go for No. 12 — but why? Before he’s able to speak on why he chose it, there are a couple of immediate reasons.

For one, it’s the number that Travis Hunter, his Buffaloes teammate and Heisman Trophy winner, will wear with the Jaguars, who selected him at No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. The bond he has with Hunter could’ve sparked the idea to follow in his footsteps in choosing No. 12.

Another reason could be Sanders’ admiration for Tom Brady, who he has trained with in past offseason and seems to have built a good relationship with — despite Brady, who is a minority owners with the Las Vegas Raiders, not vying to select Sanders in the draft, as he was reportedly very involved in their draft process with QBs.

In talking about himself going No. 144 in the draft, Sanders has referenced Brady going No. 199 in the 2000 NFL Draft and becoming arguably the greatest player of all time.

A final possible reason could be that 12 is the reversal of his father, Deion Sanders’ number when he played in the NFL. Deion wore No. 21 during his Hall of Fame career, and that could’ve been an ode to his father to reverse the number and make it his own.

Whatever it may be, it could all change once the season begins, as the numbers are not set in stone. If Carter fails to make the roster, as he had just 72 receiving yards last season for the Chicago Bears and has been a journeyman punt and kick returner, No. 2 would open up for Sanders to presumably take.

We’ll have to wait and see, but for now, he’ll be donning No. 12.
