‘It’s A Badge Of Honor’ — Analyst Reveals Why LSU’s No. 7 Jersey Means More Than You Think

Jersey numbers are assigned to players in sports so game officials and others can recognize the players and track their movements during action.

In football, the number is also designated based on the player’s position. However, the No. 7 jersey at LSU isn’t just a normal jersey number — analyst Adam Breneman explains why.

Analyst Adam Breaks Down The History Behind the Iconic LSU No. 7 Jersey

Adam Breneman, through his official social media post, explained why wearing the No. 7 jersey at LSU is such an honor.

“At LSU, the No. 7 jersey isn’t just a number — it’s a legacy. It’s worn by the guys who change games, lift the locker room, and set the tone. Patrick Peterson. Tyrann Mathieu. Leonard Fournette. Ja’Marr Chase. The #7 has become part of LSU’s DNA — a symbol of dominance, swagger, and championship pedigree,” he explained.

It has been observed that the LSU Tigers hand the No. 7 jersey to their most dynamic players. It has been reported that the tradition started with Patrick Peterson in 2008.

Although the program has produced several No. 7 players before, it all began with the former Tigers cornerback. He concluded his career with the team as one of the most decorated players in the program’s history.

Even Brian Kelly, the Tigers’ current head coach, talked about the uniqueness of the jersey number.

“The No. 7 jersey tradition is unique and special to this program, and it is worn by some of the greatest players, who wear purple and gold.” He also said, “We want to build upon that tradition and honor the best player on our team who is from the state of Louisiana.”

Harold Perkins is the latest to carry on the number’s legacy. The LSU linebacker was presented with the coveted number in August 2024. Previously, LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell wore it in 2023.

The 21-year-old has now been drafted by the New England Patriots as their fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
