Analyst Greg McElroy’s Surprising Pick for Best RB in College Football: Here’s Who Stands Out

Greg McElroy has picked his favorite running back in college football, and it’s Jeremiyah Love of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

A total of 25 running backs were selected this year in the 2025 NFL Draft, and two of them were drafted in the first round: Ashton Jeanty of the Boise State Broncos and Omarion Hampton of North Carolina. Now that they have become professionals, McElroy has no hesitation in pointing out who the best running back is in college football.

Greg McElroy Calls Jeremiyah Love CFB’s Top Running Back

During a recent episode of “Always College Football with Greg McElroy,” the American football commentator and former football quarterback said, “The best running back in college football should come really as no surprise to anyone who’s watched any of the games I’ve called and a handful of those games happen to involve this young man’s team. You could tell that I love this kid.”

The 36-year-old, without wasting any time, identified the player, saying, “It’s Jeremiyah Love at Notre Dame.”

McElroy went on to explain the reason behind why Love is his best running back. The former Alabama Crimson Tide player stated that this year, Love performed far beyond McElroy’s expectations on multiple occasions.

“There were so many times this year in which [Love] kind of defied my expectations,” he said. “I think there’s no better example of what Jeremiyah Love is capable of than that one-yard touchdown run in which he would not be denied under any circumstances against Penn State [in the College Football Playoff].”

McElroy also mentioned during the episode that “it looked like he was going to be stopped three or four times behind the line of scrimmage, and he kept churning, he kept churning and eventually put his arms out over the goal line to score the touchdown against about four Nittany Lion defenders.”

Love is currently in his junior year. He attended Christian Brothers College High School, and 247Sports, ESPN, On3, and Rivals rated him as a consensus four-star recruit during his prep days.

He began his college football career in 2023 and played in all 13 games as a freshman, starting the final game of the season. As a sophomore in 2024, he recorded 1,125 yards with a 6.9-yard average.
