From opponent to ally, Gavin Sawchuk has flipped the script. The former Oklahoma Sooners running back, who got his first breakthrough against Florida State in the 2022 Cheez-It Bowl, has committed to the Seminoles. FSU confirmed this on Sunday, May 4, following his weekend visit to Tallahassee.

The Former Oklahoma Star Gavin Sawchuk Fits into FSU’s Championship Blueprint
The redshirt junior entered the transfer portal on April 25, just before the spring window closed, and wasted no time finding his next home. Now, he’s set to chase his potential in Garnet and Gold with the team that once saw it firsthand.
Sawchuk joins the growing transfers list, including USC Trojans Jarvis Boatwright Jr., Rutgers Scarlet Knights OL Ja’Elyne Matthews, and Vanderbilt Commodores Josh Raymond. According to 247Sports’ transfer rankings, Sawchuk is the No. 479 overall player and the No. 30 RB currently in the portal.
Coming out of Valor Christian High School, he was a highly regarded four-star prospect. He was the No. 7 running back nationally and the top overall player in Colorado State.
Sadly, in 2024, a hamstring injury limited him to 39 carries for 128 yards. However, the 2023 season brought out his potential: 744 rushing yards, nine touchdowns, and an impressive 6.2 yards per carry average.
Although he redshirted his freshman year at Oklahoma, he made an early impact in the 2022 Cheez-It Bowl against Florida State, rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries.
Sawchuk’s stats aren’t so impressive, but has a dynamic skill set. The RB brings creativity and contact balance to the backfield. He has a natural feel for the game, allowing him to turn broken plays into positive gains. That kind of improvisational ability was missing from Florida State’s run game last season.
At 5’11”, 205 pounds, he’s well-built and uses his frame effectively, often powering through weak tackle attempts and poor angles. His pass protection has also improved steadily each year. While he’s not elite in that area, he’s willing, physical, and strong enough to engage defenders and disrupt pressure.

Now in Tallahassee, Sawchuk enters a deep and competitive Florida State RB room that includes seasoned names like Roydell Williams, Jaylin Lucas, Sam Singleton Jr., Kam Davis, and promising freshman Ousmane Kromah.
