‘Formula Is Not That Complicated’ — Rich Rodriguez Explains the Philosophy He’s Held Close From Glenville State to WVU

Rich Rodriguez, the head coach of West Virginia University, is one of the most successful college football coaches today. Over the years, he’s often been asked about the coaching formula that has made him so successful.

WVU Rich Rodriguez Shares His No-Frills Football Formula

In a recent interview, Rodriguez opened up about that formula. He shared how his coaching style has stayed true to its roots while also evolving with the ever-changing world of college football. Most importantly, he believes his formula isn’t complicated—and that it works everywhere.

During a recent interview with CBS Sports’ Josh Pate, Rich Rodriguez opened up about the core philosophy that has guided him through decades of coaching success. According to him, his winning formula isn’t complex—just effective.

The Mountaineer mentor explained that his core beliefs as a coach were built during his time at Glenville State, a small school in West Virginia. “The base of what we do offensively and my philosophy as a head coach got formed at Glenville State College, which was an NAIA school, then a Division 2 school,” he said.

What started at a small school eventually laid the groundwork for his success at places like Tulane, Clemson, and beyond. “It worked great there, and it worked great here,” he added. So, what’s the secret?

According to the WVU head coach, the formula is not rocket science. Build a team with talented players and dedicated coaches. Then, create a strong culture where everyone works hard and supports each other.

He pointed to his time at Jacksonville State as an example. Moving from FCS to FBS was tough, but he never changed the formula. “It’s been the same formula we’ve had for 20-some years,” the veteran football coach said. “The formula is not that complicated: you get really good players, put them in a position to have success, work really hard, and you’ll win.”

Over his career, Rich Rodriguez has led teams to four Big East championships during his time at West Virginia and a Pac-12 South Division title with Arizona in 2014. He has also earned Coach of the Year honors multiple times.

His approach may lack flash, but these results speak volumes. From Glenville State to WVU, his formula for success continues to deliver through talented players, hard work, and a team-first culture.
