After comfortably despatching Southeastern Louisiana to open the 2023 college football season, the first of Zach Arnett’s head coaching career, Mississippi State had a closer call with Arizona in Week 2. Despite holding a 14-point lead on two separate occasions within the clash with the Wildcats, it took a Jeffrey Pittman overtime receiving touchdown to scrape a 31-24 win.

The Bulldogs head into this Mississippi State vs. LSU game on the wrong side of a 77-36-3 record against the Tigers. Furthermore, they lost the previous two encounters with their SEC foe.

The clash marks the first of two matchups against ranked teams in the next three games, as they host Alabama in Week 5. The stretch could define what success will look like in 2023.

The Mississippi State vs. LSU game marks the first SEC clash on the Tigers’ schedule in what has already been a season of highs and lows for Brian Kelly’s team. Holding a half time lead against a hotly-fancied FSU team in Week 1, LSU collapsed in the second half, leaving head coach Kelly shellshocked in front of the nation’s media and in a defeated mood following the 45-24 loss.

LSU took out their frustrations on their Week 2 opponent with a walloping of in-state HBCU outfit Grambling State in Week 2. Buoyed by that comfortable win, the Tigers head into SEC play, with Mississippi State being the first of five consecutive conference games.

Their defense of the SEC West rests on them coming out of that stretch without sustaining any more losses.
