The two players come from well-established programs – wide receiver Tez Johnson, from the University of Oregon, and defensive lineman Desmond Watson from the University of Florida.
Johnson was selected with the 235th pick in the seventh round of this year’s draft. The wideout is being considered to be a kick returner with special teams. There have been questions about his size at 5-foot-9 and 154 pounds, but his performance attracted Buccaneers assistant general manager Rob McCartney.
“There’s not a lot of guys that have cracked it under 160 (pounds), but you’ve got Tutu Atwell, you’ve got a guy like Tank Dell,” he said to Sports Illustrated.
At Oregon, Johnson led the team in receiving for the past two seasons, holding the program record for most receptions in a single season with 86 in total. He also had a solid performance in the 2024 Big Ten championship, catching 11 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown.
He is the adopted brother of current Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, who starred under center at Oregon.
During his school’s Pro Day, Florida’s Desmond Watson clocked in as the heaviest draft prospect in March at 6-foot-6 and 464 pounds. Tampa Bay selected him as an undrafted free agent, seeing his potential on the line by giving him a $50,000 guarantee for his contract and a $20,000 signing bonus.

Watson never missed a snap in his career at Florida, and while conditioning has been a question, he’s already shown a commitment to staying active by slimming down to 437 pounds in just a month.
The Buccaneers envision him as one part of a massive defensive line that also stars Pro Bowler Vita Vea, who checks in at 6’4″ and 347 pounds, outweighed by 90 pounds by Watson.
