Cedric Coward’s Unconventional Journey from Division III to Duke

Before starting his Division I career, Coward put up impressive stats at the Division III level, averaging 19.4 points and 12 rebounds per game. His excellent performance earned him a transfer to Eastern Washington, where he continued to excel.

He then averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists for Washington State before a shoulder injury prematurely ended his season.

But even with these challenges, Coward’s talent grabbed the attention of top programs to the point where he was recently able to commit to Duke, choosing them over Alabama and a potential entry into the 2025 NBA Draft.

In an exclusive interview with Field of 68, Coward shared insights into his decision-making process and emphasized the unique connection he felt with Duke’s coaching staff.

“Coach Scheyer and the staff made it feel like home… not only was I needed, but kind of like in a way I gravitated towards it and I was the best fit.”

Coward also highlighted the cultural fit.

“They value a lot of the same things I value in terms of just people and especially on the basketball court.” This mutual respect and shared vision between Coward and Duke’s program underscored his decision to join the Blue Devils.

One of Coward’s standout attributes is his versatility on the court. He described himself as a player who can “do anything and everything,” emphasizing his willingness to adapt for the team’s success. “I like to win… I don’t care if I have to score 40 points or I have to score four points,” he remarked, showcasing his team-first mentality.

Duke’s strategic approach to development is adaptability, which means the ability to be multifaceted as a player. Coward, who offers a generous dose of offense, is a welcome weapon for the Blue Devils because of his versatility in guarding multiple positions.

Coward has already declared for the NBA Draft but is leaving open the possibility of returning to college basketball.
