Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Room on Watch as Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard Joins Depth Chart

Anthony Richardson has established himself as the Colts’ young franchise quarterback, yet murmurs of an addition do exist. It is being strongly said that Riley Leonard of Notre Dame may be in consideration for the Colts in the NFL Draft. With Leonard’s combination of size, mobility, and leadership traits, this potential shocker would throw a major curve into the quarterback picture in Indianapolis.

Colts Bolster QB Depth by Drafting Riley Leonard to Support and Challenge Anthony Richardson

A recent report from a Colts insider has made its way onto the internet, speculating that Indianapolis is giving Riley Leonard some serious consideration. The Notre Dame standout has flashed NFL traits despite battling injuries during the 2024 season. This talk only gathers steam, given how much trust the Colts have now placed in Richardson.

Standing at 6’4″ with a cannon for an arm and quite a bit of athleticism, Leonard embodies the dual-threat quarterback that thrives in today’s NFL. If the Colts were to draft him, suddenly, burning questions would arise regarding their short- and long-term plans at quarterback.

Introducing another baby-faced quarterback might appear to be an anomaly, but in the eyes of the Colts, it pays to have depth at the position. Anthony Richardson truly dazzled at times last season but battled injuries. Drafting Leonard would offer him as a capable backup-or even competitive-who shares similar skills and traits that would flourish in Shane Steichen’s offensive playbook.

This would also be a move to protect the future. In the NFL today, having your quarterback protected is imperative, and Leonard may either catalyze Richardson’s skill to another level or mature into a highly tradable asset.

Leonard Brings Talent, Toughness, and New Strategic Options for the Colts

Leonard’s greatest attributes are a rare mixture of physical skill and leadership. Though this last year was tough for him, evaluators rave about his ability to execute outside the pocket, deliver strikes downfield, and rally his teammates under pressure.

If Leonard is healthy, he is Day-2 NFL Draft material, with upward mobility able to be groomed without being forced into action immediately. His competitiveness and toughness could win the prize of a fit for the Colts’ locker room culture.

Drafting Leonard would be a definitive statement saying the Colts are not putting all their eggs in one basket. It only causes more pressure for Richardson to stay healthy and perform. It also potentially causes the coaching staff to rethink their strategy regarding quarterback uses, possibly creating packages or scenarios for both players to be unleashed creatively.
