How Damien Martinez’s Family Background Influenced His Football Career

Martinez hails from Lewisville, Texas, where his mother, Samantha Martinez, raised him. She is the only parent listed on his official Oregon State University profile, and there is limited public information about her beyond her name and nationality.

Despite the scarcity of details, Samantha played a pivotal role in Damien’s life and football career.

In a 2025 interview, Martinez reflected on his upbringing, sharing fond memories of his grandmother’s Mexican cooking:

“Like every other Mexican family, (we had) great food all the time growing up and especially being with my grandparents all the time,” Martinez said. “In the morning, my grandma would make some good breakfast tacos. And I don’t know why I would just love eating them throughout the day too, so I would just have her make me tacos all the time.”

    The Journey to Miami

Determination and resilience became the essential elements that led Martinez to the University of Miami. Martin played his high school football at Lewisville High School before committing to Oregon State University following his exceptional three-year run as a Lewisville Tigers athlete.

During his time at Oregon State, Martinez collected the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award and became a member of the First-Team All-Pac-12 team.

Following two successful seasons, Martinez entered the transfer portal. Miami’s coaching staff recognized his potential and made concerted efforts to recruit him, engaging Damien and his mother. Shawn O’Gorman, Martinez’s agent, noted:

“Miami is in a great spot. The staff has been recruiting him insanely heavily, which is good. Not only him, but his mother as well. Which is important. This is a family decision – I call them ‘Team Martinez.’”

Martinez emphasized that his decision to transfer was not financially motivated but was about finding the right fit to showcase his skills:

“The best place I thought I could do it was here (at Miami) and not there,” he said. “That’s how I decided to enter the portal.”

During his one year at Miami Hurricane Football, Martinez demonstrated outstanding performance by gaining 1,002 rushing yards while scoring 10 touchdowns to earn All-ACC Honorable Mention status. His recent performances have proved his potential as a valuable choice in the upcoming NFL Draft.
