On the outside looking in as far as the Big Ten/Pac-12 realignment is concerned, Washington State will have an axe to grind in their biggest non-conference clash. It’s an axe with some force behind it after beating the Badgers in Madison last season, with the returning Cameron Ward giving them some serious firepower on offense as they look to build on a big Week 1 win.

The Cougars mauled the Colorado State Rams on opening weekend, and while Wisconsin offers a much tougher test, a victory should ensure a 3-0 start to take into Pac-12 play. Avoiding USC and reigning conference champions Utah is a major boost for their aspirations of building on a 7-6 campaign in Jake Dickert’s first season at the helm in Pullman.

The Luke Fickell era in Madison began in Week 1, and to say there were some teething issues is a mild understatement. The 38-17 winning box score against MAC outfit Buffalo hides the fact that the Badgers carried just a four-point lead in at the half and struggled to weaponize quarterback Tanner Mordecai. Ultimately, the tried and tested Wisconsin ground ball sealed the win.

Washington State poses the biggest out-of-conference threat to Fickell’s early tenure, although a visit from the high-volume passing attack of Georgia Southern will test the Badgers’ secondary. Circle Oct. 28 as the true test of what Wisconsin can achieve this season, with Ohio State the game of their season on a Big Ten schedule that avoids Michigan and Penn State in 2023.
