Born on June 29, 2004, in Warm Springs, Georgia, Mykel was raised in Columbus, Georgia, where he attended Hardaway High School. Mykel’s football career was never a one-man show—it was fueled by the unrelenting encouragement of his family, particularly his father, John Johnson.
Not only has John been at every turn of Mykel’s ascension, but he’s also been his mentor, coach, and biggest cheerleader all wrapped into one.
John Johnson is an American citizen and, professionally, has been involved in education and youth guidance. Off the field, he’s respected for his calm leadership and no-nonsense demeanor that rubbed off on Mykel in the early days. It was John who initially saw Mykel’s potential on the field and urged him to take football seriously. He wasn’t the stereotypical sports dad who barked from the sidelines—he had a hands-on but measured approach.
“Mykel had always been a weight-room warrior and a student of his craft,” Johnson told Sports Illustrated in an interview. “When he told us he wanted to make the transition from offensive tackle to defensive end, we went at it. We began watching every instructional video we could get our hands on of defensive lines on Twitter, purchased hand guards, cones—you name it—and worked all summer.”
Mykel’s mother, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, has also played an important role in his upbringing, especially by keeping the home life stable.
His coaches and friends have frequently spoken about how down-to-earth and disciplined Mykel is. She’s been called a calming presence, one who brought organization, school orientation, and emotional equilibrium to his otherwise chaotic, football-centered life.

When he was a senior at Hardaway High, Mykel was already the Maxwell Football Club’s National High School Defensive Player of the Year. With that, he was ranked a five-star prospect by 247Sports and Rivals.
All that work and his dad’s guidance were paying dividends. Colleges were beating down his door, but for Mykel, Georgia was the easy decision, largely because it kept him close to home and family.
From Columbus to the Bulldogs’ Defensive Front
Williams was not slow in making his mark at Georgia. As a freshman, he featured in all 15 games, starting two of them, and recorded 4.5 sacks and 28 tackles.
It earned him Freshman All-American honors and established him as a foundation stone of the Bulldogs’ defensive line going forward. John Johnson remained an unseen presence in the background, watching games, studying film, and providing post-game critiques, not as a fault-finder, but as a mentor.
His father’s experience in mentorship proved valuable when Mykel faced adversity. During a stretch in his sophomore year when injuries began to creep in, John helped keep his mindset strong. “I told him this was all part of the process,” John said. “Injuries happen. You’ve got to trust your body and your preparation. And he did.”
