In a headline-grabbing twist, NFL icon Bill Belichick was named the 35th head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels on Dec. 11, 2024. Despite having no experience in college coaching, the veteran inked a five-year deal, showing he is determined to reshape the program.
Appearing on the ESPN “College GameDay” panel on Saturday, March 8, Belichick gave a glimpse of the UNC football plan. True to form, it is as methodical as it is ambitious.

Bill Belichick’s UNC Football Plan: A New Era of Coaching
Belichick appeared on College GameDay before but during the football season. This Saturday, however, marked his first experience with Jay Bilas, Jay Williams, and the rest of the crew.
Much of the discussion centered on his outlook for the 2025 season – a topic that had everyone leaning in. True to his reputation, though, he kept his cards close to the vest.
As he takes on coaching at the college level, “GameDay” host Rece Davis asked Belichick how the growing professionalism in college football has influenced his approach compared to his days with the New England Patriots.
“It is what it is. It’s something that I’ve been doing for a long time. It’s just the kids are a little bit younger now, but it’s the same process. Free agency happens after one year instead of four. There are a few modifications, but it’s very similar.”
Because of some familiarity between college football and NFL recruitment, the former NFL coach hired ex-NFL executive Michael Lombardi as the team’s general manager. Lombardi’s tasks are managing NIL deals and the team’s finances, allowing Belichick to focus on scouting top-tier talent and building a winning team.
“It’s a head coach-GM model. We obviously work together and formulate our plan, but Lombardi handles really the GM side of it, the contracts, the salaries, so forth. But again, it’s what we’ve been doing for 30-some years. We’re used to it.”
Belichick also talked about UNC recruitment, notably the opportunities brought about by player departures. With recruits already on board and a major push for a strong incoming class underway, he’s seizing the chance to rebuild.
The expanded scholarship limit of 105 from 85 allows him to assemble a roster packed with talent.
Looking ahead, North Carolina won’t have a spring game to cap off their practices. This decision builds even more anticipation for the team’s highly awaited debut under Belichick’s leadership.
