From JUCO walk-on to first-team All-CUSA, Tru Edwards’ collegiate football journey has been among the most inspirational. But it’s not over yet. Thanks to the NCAA’s recent waiver granting an extra year of eligibility to former JUCO players, Edwards will play college football in 2025 — just not with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
Where Will Tru Edwards Transfer?
Following the NCAA’s announcement, Edwards entered the transfer portal. In 2024, he hauled in 77 receptions for 897 yards and six touchdowns, earning first-team all-conference honors.
While Edwards was born in Shreveport, La., he was raised in Texas, where he starred as a two-sport athlete (football and track) at Mansfield Legacy High School. He was a regional champion in the 110-meter hurdles and shined in the triple jump and 4×400 relay but only played one season of varsity football (27-451-3 receiving line).

As a result, Edwards had to walk on at Navarro College — a JUCO in Corsicana, Texas — despite his father, Troy Edwards, being a former Biletnikoff Award winner (1998) and seven-year NFL veteran.
Two seasons, 54 catches, 791 yards, and six TDs later, the younger Edwards received a scholarship to play for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. After a five-reception season, he left for Louisiana Tech, and, as they say, the rest is history. With one more year to go, where will Edwards play in 2025?
TCU Horned Frogs
The TCU Horned Frogs’ top two WRs, Jack Bech and Savion Williams, are off to the NFL, and WR3 JP Richardson could join them. They’ll need reinforcements for QB Josh Hoover this offseason, and he’d love a big-bodied WR like Edwards (6’3″, 200 pounds) on the outside.
There’s also a connection of note on staff, as Todd Graham is an offensive analyst. Graham was Hawaii’s head coach in Edwards’ lone season with the program and could tap into that relationship to draw the WR to Forth Worth.
Texas A&M Aggies
If returning to Texas is high on Edwards’ priority list, the Texas A&M Aggies could be the top choice. Not only will he be able to continue the program’s revival under head coach Mike Elko and alongside rising QB Marcel Reed, but he’ll also compete in the SEC.
The issue is playing time. The Aggies have landed three transfer WRs in Texas Tech’s Micah Hudson, Mississippi State’s Mario Cramer, and NC State’s KC Concepcion.
Florida State Seminoles
Mike Norvell and Co. have been busy in the transfer portal coming off one of the biggest one-season declines in college football history. WRs Malik Benson, Deuce Spann, and Destyn Hill have exited, but USC’s Duce Robinson has entered, as has Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos.
Former UCF head coach Gus Malzahn brings his run-heavy scheme to Tallahassee as the new offensive coordinator, and with Castellanos under center, it’s clear the passing game won’t be as much of an emphasis in 2025. Nevertheless, someone has to catch the ball, and Edwards’ large catch radius will certainly be a boon.
South Carolina Gamecocks
It just means more. Yet another SEC program, the South Carolina Gamecocks, has already offered Edwards a scholarship. LaNorris Sellers will be back under center, but there is only one returning scholarship WR over 6’0″ tall, and that’s junior Nyck Harbor.

The offense could use some size out wide, but Edwards has no issue playing in the slot, as he did on more than 90% of his snaps in 2024.
USC Trojans
No more Zachariah Branch, Duce Robinson, or Kyron Hudson. Who will Jayden Maiava (or whoever starts under center) throw to next year?
Well, leading WRs Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane will be back. Yes, losing those three WRs will hurt, but let’s not act like the WRs 3/4/5 are irreplaceable on the depth chart. With Lemon occupying the slot, Edwards could move to the boundary with relative ease, which should be a win-win in Lincoln Riley’s pass-happy attack.
