Landing Spots for Antonio Gates Jr.

While he redshirted in 2022, last year Gates stepped on the field and made five receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown. In a different system, he could end up being a star receiver in college football.

Kent State Golden Flashes

Let’s have some fun and shoot for the stars. Kent State is where Gates’ legendary father Antonio Gates Sr. went to school. A former four-star receiver would most likely not make the drop to a MAC school, but Gates would instantly be a starter and would be one of the best players in the conference.

Pittsburgh Panthers

Pittsburgh finished eighth in the conference last year in passing yards and featured the last-ranked offense in the ACC. The Panthers offered Gates a scholarship before he went to Michigan State. Gates gives the Panthers a lengthy target in the passing game and could hop in as one of the starters.

Eastern Michigan Eagles

This one might be a reach once again with another MAC school on the list, but some signs point toward Eastern Michigan not being too crazy of an option. The Eagles offered Gates a scholarship and it would keep him in his home state near his family. Furthermore, it’s another location where he would be a star wide receiver as the team is coming off being the second-worst passing game in the MAC.

Penn State Nittany Lions

One of Michigan State’s biggest rivals might have a spot for the pass catcher to help quarterback Drew Allar out. Penn State has been a consistent powerhouse in college football but needs more playmakers at wide receiver with three of the top four players in receiving yards last year not being receivers. Gates would have stiff competition but could provide the Nittany Lions the receiver they need.

Wyoming Cowboys

Former Michigan State offensive coordinator Jay Johnson has moved on to Wyoming to take the same position with the Cowboys. Gates has that connection with being in coach Johnson’s system over the last two years.

The Mountain West is only getting stronger, so Gates would give the Cowboys the spark on offense needed to help with the transition to Johnson.
