California Golden Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza has announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal, sharing the news on social media. At 6’5″ and 225 pounds, the redshirt sophomore has become a player to watch in this year’s portal frenzy after a successful year leading Cal in its first ACC season.
With two seasons of eligibility left, Mendoza’s size, talent, and potential make him one of the most sought-after quarterbacks available. His next chapter is yet to be written, but interest will undoubtedly be high.
Where Could Fernando Mendoza Transfer?
Mendoza showcased remarkable consistency this season, completing 68.7% of his passes for 3,004 yards, 16 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. The Miami native had five games with over 70% accuracy and has accumulated 4,712 passing yards and 30 touchdowns in 20 career games. Mendoza missed Cal’s regular-season finale against SMU due to flu-like symptoms, a game the Bears lost 38-6.

With Cal (6-6) preparing to face UNLV (10-3) in the LA Bowl, the quarterback situation remains uncertain. If Chandler Rogers recovers from his injury, he’ll likely start. If not, CJ Harris could take the reins. As for Mendoza, the sweepstakes for the next team to land him is heating up quickly. Two teams preparing for the 2024 College Football Playoff are prepping to lure Mendoza for 2025.
So, what could be the potential options for Mendoza’s next stop?
Georgia Bulldogs
Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are laser-focused on their 2024 national title pursuit, but the future looms large in 2025. With Carson Beck in his final collegiate season, the search for Georgia’s next starting quarterback begins. Sophomore Gunner Stockton impressed in relief during the SEC title game, yet his status as the 2025 starter remains uncertain.
Adding intrigue, Georgia made a strong push to sign highly touted high school prospect Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, but the coveted quarterback ultimately chose Oregon. For Smart and the Bulldogs, the quest to secure their next signal-caller continues.
Miami Hurricanes
The Miami Hurricanes certainly have the most substantial ties to Mendoza. A product of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Mendoza’s father, Alberto Sr., was once a high school teammate of Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal. This fall, Mendoza nearly engineered an upset over the Hurricanes in Berkeley, Calif., throwing for 285 yards and two touchdowns in a thrilling late-night showdown.
As Miami (FL) evaluates its options to succeed Cam Ward under center, Mendoza’s name feels like a natural fit. While current backup Emory Williams remains in the mix, Mendoza’s performance and connection to the program make him a compelling candidate for the Hurricanes’ future at quarterback.
Wisconsin Badgers
On paper, Fernando Mendoza appears to be an ideal fit for the Wisconsin Badgers. With top-ranked freshman Carter Smith waiting in the wings, the program seeks a steady presence to bridge the gap until Smith is ready to take the reins.
Mendoza offers the stability Wisconsin desperately needs after cycling through three different starters in three years, with a fourth expected in 2025. Mendoza has shown he can lead a successful offense in a crowded ACC.
Under new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, the Badgers are transitioning back to a pro-style system. For Wisconsin to compete at the highest level, consistent and strong quarterback play isn’t just an option — it’s a necessity. Mendoza could be the answer they’re searching for.
UCLA Bruins
Senior Ethan Garbers led the UCLA Bruins under center this year, but with his departure, they are searching for their next quarterback. While UCLA may not have the same allure as some of its rivals, Mendoza would likely step in as a ready-made starter in 2025.

Adding offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri brings a compelling opportunity for Mendoza’s development. The Miami native would find a system designed to elevate his strengths. Though Mendoza’s decision timeline remains unclear, it’s evident UCLA is making a concerted effort to bring his talent from Cal to the bright lights of Los Angeles.
Indiana Hoosiers
Like the Bulldogs, the Indiana Hoosiers are prepping for a run in the 12-team CFP with a first-round matchup at in-state rival Notre Dame. Indiana’s leap into the top 10 this season, following a 3-9 campaign a year ago, has been nothing short of remarkable.
The transformation largely hinges on quarterback Kurtis Rourke, a transfer from Ohio, whose leadership has powered the Hoosiers’ resurgence. However, Rourke’s eligibility concludes this season, leaving Indiana at a crossroads.
The Hoosiers already have ties to Miami native Mendoza, whose brother, Alberto, is a freshman quarterback on the roster. With 2024 four-star recruit Tyler Cherry joining Tayven Jackson as a potential successor, Indiana’s quarterback room looks promising. Yet, in the ever-evolving landscape of college football, head coach Curt Cignetti may still explore the transfer portal to ensure stability under center for seasons to come.
