5 Transfer Portal Landing Spots for Braylon Braxton Include West Virginia, Virginia

The Marshall Thundering Herd's starting quarterback Braylon Braxton will hit the transfer portal for the second straight season.

The 6’2″ senior from Frisco, Texas, began his career at Tulsa, playing 19 games across three seasons before transferring to the Marshall Thundering Herd. This year, Braxton went 8-0 as the Herd’s starter, throwing for 1,624 yards and 19 touchdowns with just two interceptions, completing 60.2% of his passes. His dual-threat ability shined as he added 610 rushing yards and four scores, guiding Marshall to its first 10-win season since 2015.

But following head coach Charles Huff’s announcement that he was leaving Marshall for Southern Miss, Braxton announced he would enter the transfer portal. Braxton will certainly be a target for many top schools heading into 2025.

    Where Could Braylon Braxton Transfer?

Braxton just completed an excellent 2024 season for Marshall, leading the Thundering Herd to a Sun Belt Championship title with a resounding win over Louisiana in the title game. Following a three-year stint at Tulsa, the former Marshall quarterback is now set to take another step in his collegiate career as a dual-threat quarterback.

Braxton will undoubtedly be among the most sought-after experienced quarterbacks from the Group of Five schools. With his championship pedigree, Braxton could get the opportunity to lead a Power Four school next season. So, where could Braxton take his talents in 2025?

    West Virginia Mountaineers

The West Virginia Mountaineers just made headlines by bringing back former head coach Rich Rodriguez. With Garrett Greene out of eligibility, Rodriguez will undoubtedly look to the portal to bring some depth and competition to the quarterback room.

Braxton certainly fits the dual-threat mold that Rodriguez has had success with in the past, and as Braxton is already an experienced QB with a ton of success in the state of West Virginia with Marshall, a marriage with Rodriguez’s squad is even more possible.

    Syracuse Orange

After watching Kyle McCord flourish in Fran Brown’s pass-first offensive system, the Syracuse Orange’s allure grows stronger for players seeking the same stage. With his dual-threat talent, Braxton has the tools to immediately impact the ACC landscape.

Brown’s system, built for precision and playmaking, offers a perfect canvas for a quarterback like Braxton to thrive. If the Orange explore the transfer portal, Braxton could find a home under Brown’s steady guidance — a partnership brimming with potential for success.

    Virginia Cavaliers

With the Virginia Cavaliers losing 43 players to exhausted eligibility and 16 more to the portal, Tony Elliott and his staff face a daunting offseason. Nowhere is the need more urgent than at quarterback.

Virginia’s quarterback room is in flux, with Tony Muskett graduating and Anthony Colandrea entering the portal. The Cavaliers’ current options — Grady Brosterhous and Gavin Frakes, a transfer from New Mexico State — lack significant experience. Two freshmen are set to join the roster, but Elliott knows an experienced signal-caller is essential.

The search for a leader at the game’s most critical position will define Virginia’s offseason in the transfer portal. For the Cavaliers, Braxton could be the steady, experienced presence to lead the team into its next chapter.

    Missouri Tigers

Some people may see this as a stretch, but I really don’t believe it is. Eli Drinkwitz is on a mission. With the transfer portal in full swing and an NIL budget ready to make waves, Missouri’s head coach is addressing critical needs ahead of the 2025 season. The Missouri Tigers face challenges at key positions, most importantly at quarterback.

Mizzou has already shown interest in USC’s Miller Moss, one of the portal’s most coveted quarterbacks. However, regardless of Moss’ decision, experience in the quarterback room remains essential.

Enter Braylon Braxton, a proven winner with the potential to thrive in a Power Four program. While he may be considered a sleeper, his track record of success could earn him a serious look from a team like Missouri, hungry to solidify its roster for the road ahead.

    Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Coastal Carolina faces a pressing need at quarterback for 2025 after top prospect Chris Denson flipped his commitment to Clemson. To complicate matters, both starting quarterback Ethan Vasko and backup Noah Kim have entered the transfer portal.

For Braxton, a move to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers might appear lateral, but his proven ability to lead a Group of Five program to a conference title could make him the perfect fit. Coastal, in search of a steady and experienced leader, would gladly welcome Braxton to guide their program forward. For a team in transition, he could be the answer they’re seeking to stay competitive in the Sun Belt.
