The debut of Bill Belichick’s UNC will be on Sept. 1, when he will start his career as a coach, facing off with TCU in a prime-time opening game. Although the narrative itself has been widely discussed, a more in-depth examination of matchup dynamics would lead one to believe that the Tar Heels might be vulnerable. Here is why.

1. TCU’s Passing Game Threatens to Exploit UNC’s Secondary
TCU has senior QB Josh Hoover, who passed for almost 4,000 yards in 2024, already has an experienced receiver group with Eric McAlister at the helm. UNC’s defensive secondary, even in Steve Belichick’s aggressive scheme, has only been tested to a small extent.
The defense could be vulnerable to big plays as it lacks reps from the recent coaching change. The difference in turnover likely works to the advantage of the Horned Frogs.
2. The Offensive Line of UNC Is a Disaster And Gio Lopez Is the Price.
UNC will start South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez as quarterback, and it seems he will have his hands full. The UNC offensive line is beat up without Christo Kelly and Austin Blake. This weak line should struggle and could be pressured by the TCU defensive front, with a true freshman in Eidan Buchanan starting at left tackle.
3. Coaching vs. Overhaul.
TCU’s Sonny Dykes, is a veteran in almost every aspect of the game. He brings back most of his offense and staff and has the Frogs ready for contention.
On the other side, UNC comes in with a new identity, including 70 players, 41 transfers, and a new system under Belichick. That little cohesion could be risky during Week 1.
4. Betting Lines and Market Sentiment
Gambling markets have changed. UNC started as a narrow home favorite but has moved to the TCU side at -3.5 with totals of about 55.5.
TCU has a +62% probability to win according to the moneyline probability. This seems to reflect that oddsmakers regard the volatility at UNC as a liability and not a wildcard.
5. Bill Belichick’s Debut as College Coach Adds Pressure, Not Guarantee
Though he has an illustrious NFL history, Bill Belichick is somewhat known for historically losing his first game in charge. In both his head-coaching debuts with the Browns and the Patriots, Belichick’s squads lost.
This scenario brings even more roster turnover and a prime-time game, which seems like a lot of pressure for a bunch of college players.
Bottom Line
TCU goes into the Kenan Stadium opener with offensive continuity and established personnel. On the other hand, the Tar Heels have a marginal offensive line and a completely new system in place. The Frogs seem to be in a more advantageous position, but only time will tell if Bill Belichick can turn UNC into contenders in Year 1.
