NC State Stunn Notre Dame in Double Overtime Win

“That’s a ranked WOLFPACK WIN,” the post was captioned.

The win is the first for NC State against an AP No. 1 team since 2021 and the first win against an AP No. 1 team at home since 1978, when the Wolfpack beat Wayland Baptist. In addition, the Wolfpack are the first team to score 100 points against a top-ranked team this century.

NC State knocked off No. 1 Notre Dame in double overtime, outscoring the Fighting Irish 12-3 in the second overtime period. Notre Dame entered the game as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 19 straight games.

The Fighting Irish were hoping to solidify their position as the no. 1 team in the ACC and the top overall seed for March Madness. However, the Wolfpack had other ideas, putting up a strong performance in the back-and-forth game.

Zoe Brooks carried the home team as she scored a game-high 33 points on 9 of 20 shooting from the field, including five points in NC State’s 12-3 lead in the second overtime period.

“Great feeling. Great atmosphere. It’s a really big game (against the) No. 1 team in the country, and I just had a lot of fun today,” Brooks told ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the win.

“We always play together. We are a sisterhood. We are a family. And we know when we play together, we can beat anybody in the country,” she added.

Interestingly, Brooks and Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo, who led the Irish in scoring with 26 points on 8 of 26 shooting with five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block, have a history that goes back to their high school days.

“Me and Hannah have been playing on the same team for years. I love playing against her. Played against her in high school and now in college. It’s just great competing against her,” Brooks said.

Notre Dame now holds a one-game lead over the Wolfpack in the ACC standings, in their first loss in the conference. It is also their third loss of the season. However, the Irish still have a chance to regain their top spot as they hope to close out the regular season against Florida State and Louisville with victory.

Meanwhile, NC State will finish its regular-season contests against Wake Forest and SMU before heading to Charlotte, N.C., for the 2025 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
