Success comes at a price, but for the Texas Longhorns, the cost of keeping women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer is a bargain.
The University of Texas System Board of Regents recently approved a three-year contract extension for Schaefer, ensuring he remains at the helm of the Longhorns’ women’s basketball program through the 2029-2030 season. With Texas thriving under his leadership, the extension cements his role in shaping the program’s future.

Texas Extends Vic Schaefer Through 2030
Vic Schaefer has been transformative since taking over at Texas in 2020. Now in his fifth season, he has guided the Longhorns to three Elite Eight appearances, positioning them as one of the nation’s elite programs.
The team currently holds a 26-2 record and is ranked No. 2 in the country. Texas also shares the top spot in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), strengthening its case for a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Despite his impressive track record, Schaefer’s salary remains relatively modest compared to other top-tier coaches. His current annual base salary of $2.3 million will stay the same through the 2026–27 season before increasing by $100,000 each year of the extension, reaching $2.6 million by 2030.
During his tenure, Texas has flourished under Schaefer’s leadership, boasting a 135-34 record. His coaching resume also includes back-to-back Final Four appearances with Mississippi State in 2017 and 2018, further solidifying his reputation as one of the best in the game.
A Competitive Deal in Women’s Hoops
Schaefer’s contract appears to be a value deal compared to other elite women’s basketball coaches. South Carolina’s Dawn Staley recently signed a lucrative extension that boosts her salary to $4 million annually, with incremental increases.
Meanwhile, UConn’s Geno Auriemma and LSU’s Kim Mulkey each earn more than $3 million per year. Notably, Staley, Auriemma, and Mulkey are among the only active women’s basketball coaches with national championship titles to their names.
While Schaefer has yet to secure a national championship, his track record suggests that Texas is on the verge of breaking through. His disciplined coaching style and ability to develop talent have positioned the Longhorns as perennial contenders.

Texas is tied with South Carolina for first place in the SEC with a 12-1 conference record. The Longhorns have a crucial matchup ahead as they prepare to host Georgia on Sunday. As the postseason quickly approaches, the upcoming games will be pivotal in determining their tournament seeding and championship aspirations.
Schaefer’s extension reflects Texas’ confidence in his ability to advance the program. As the Longhorns continue their pursuit of a national title, the investment in Schaefer ensures stability and continuity for a team with its sights set on sustained success.
