Dawn Staley on Gamecocks’ Preparations for Georgia

Staley will lead South Carolina back into action on Feb. 7, 2025, when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum. The Gamecocks enter the contest after an 83-66 victory over Auburn on Feb. 2, 2025.

While the games are coming fast, Staley insists her team has no choice but to stay prepared as they face a different Georgia squad this year. The 54-year-old coach shared her thoughts in an interview that premiered on South Carolina Gamecocks’ YouTube page on Feb. 5, 2025.

“I mean, people get up to play. You know, we don’t always get up—we need to get up and stay up. They are different this year; they are athletic. They play the zone half the time, which is pretty active. They are just relentless on both sides of the basketball, so we gotta play 40 minutes,” Staley said.

The Gamecocks have been dominant all season, sitting atop the Southeastern Conference with a 21-1 record. South Carolina is riding a 16-game winning streak and will look to extend it to 17 straight wins against a team they have beaten in their last six meetings.

Staley’s Super Bowl Excitement and A’ja Wilson’s New Shoe

Staley isn’t just focused on the Gamecocks’ showdown with Georgia this weekend—she’s also looking forward to Super Bowl LIX, where her Philadelphia Eagles will face the Kansas City Chiefs.

When asked about the game, Staley didn’t hold back on her confidence in the Eagles.

“My Eagles fans, we got this one. Now, get mad if we fumble the ball. Get mad if they score on us. Just remember—when the clock strikes zero, we will be winners.”

The Hall of Fame coach also expressed her excitement about receiving A’ja Wilson’s first Nike signature shoe, which is set to be released in May. Staley, who coached Wilson at South Carolina, praised the shoes for their comfort.

“Comfortable. I don’t like basketball shoes; I like comfort at my age. And I can actually wear them anywhere and feel like, you know, I don’t need to take them off every time.”
