Analyst Gives Thoughts on Mystics’ Shyanne Sellers Snub, Georgia Amoore Pick

The 2025 WNBA draft saw teams add or stack their rosters with talents from colleges across the nation or overseas. Among the talent was Shyanne Sellers, who was selected by the Golden State Valkyries 17th overall.

The Valkyries’ selection of Shyanne Sellers was quite a surprising move, as Sellers was predicted to be picked by the Washington Mystics with the sixth pick. The Mystics had the third, fourth, and sixth picks, and they selected Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, and Georgia Amoore.

Why Did The Mystics Pass On Shyanne Sellers?

The Washington Mystics selected Georgia Amoore with the number six pick, while Shyanne Sellers went to the Golden State Valkyries at number 17. Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson was reported to be interested in Sellers at number six but ultimately chose Amoore.

The reason for picking Amoore over Sellers will probably never be revealed, as Johnson never publicly confirmed he would pick Sellers, but CBS analyst Terrika Foster-Brasby shared her thoughts.

“Sydney Johnson, I think, made the most of what he had in those picks, and granted I did think they may have gone with Shyanne Sellers in that number six position just because I think, again, she’s a versatile two-way player and a hometown girl.

“But the fact that they used that position to get Georgia Amoore who again is gonna bring another guard who can shoot from the outside who can play well along others…I love that.” Foster-Brasby said.

Sellers earned numerous accolades in her college career, including multiple All-Big Ten honors and recognition as a WBCA Division I Coaches All-America finalist in 2024. She finished her senior season in a historic fashion, becoming the first player in Maryland’s history to accumulate over 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists.

Sellers is a versatile two-way player who can play as a guard or on the wing. With her athleticism, defensive prowess, and ability to create a wide range of shots for herself, she’s going to be a very useful asset for the Valkyries.

The Valkyries selected Justė Jocytė, a forward from Lithuania, with the fifth pick. Jocyte and Sellers will join Kate Martin and the rest of the squad as the Valkyries start their first-ever season in the WNBA.
