The Wisconsin Badgers are undergoing a major change. General Manager Max Stienecker, a key figure in the Badgers’ recent recruiting success, has been hired by the conference rival USC Trojans.
Stienecker, known for his high-energy approach and strong relationships with recruits, is set to join the Trojans’ recruiting department. His departure leaves Wisconsin with a major gap to fill as it looks to maintain momentum in the Big Ten.

Stienecker played a critical role in Wisconsin’s recruiting efforts under head coach Luke Fickell. At just 24 years old, he helped assemble the program’s highest-ranked recruiting class in history, with 11 four-star signings in 2024. The 2025 class, which he also helped shape, currently ranks No. 26 nationally.
Originally following Fickell from Cincinnati to Wisconsin in 2022, Stienecker quickly became an essential part of the Badgers’ recruiting operation. He worked alongside Wisconsin’s Director of Recruiting, Pat Lambert, overseeing the recruitment of running backs, tight ends, and linebackers.
Stienecker’s ability to connect with players was well known, with recruits like Sam Lateju crediting him as a major reason for choosing Wisconsin.
The recruiting guru will now reunite with Chad Bowden, USC’s newly appointed recruiting director, who previously worked with him at Cincinnati. The Trojans have consistently struggled to land top-tier recruits in recent years, and their hiring of Stienecker is part of a broader effort to turn things around.
He is expected to become the executive director of personnel and work closely with Head Coach Lincoln Riley to build a stronger roster.
What’s Next for Wisconsin?
The Badgers still have a strong recruiting department, but replacing Stienecker’s presence and impact will not be easy. Lambert remains in his role alongside key staffers like Taylor Ewald and Marisa Pavone, but filling Stienecker’s general manager position will be crucial.
Fickell has shown a strong eye for talent, both on the field and in his staffing hires, and will need to find the right person to maintain Wisconsin’s recent recruiting success.
